As of the time of publishing, a danger-to-life wind warning has been issued by UK-based Met Office, with wind speeds forecast to get up to 80-to-90 miles-per-hour in the west. Along the North Seas coasts, the wind will be less intense, but still fairly strong and coming from the north.

Stay safe along the coast and in the water.

There’s a longstanding tradition for many West Coast surfers on Thanksgiving Day. Surf before turkey. This is especially true because more often than not, we wake up Thursday morning to classic bluebird fall conditions and some kind of rideable wave within striking distance and we know we need to deserve the turkey. This is partly ’cause November is often blessed by days, if not weeks of high pressure — meaning offshore or no wind and sunshine. Often, the North Pacific produces. (Which it did for Hawaii this year — more on that soon.) This year, though, a sneaky, very late season Southern Hemisphere swell was on the menu, which suited everyone in SoCal just fine.

Storm Conall took a well-aimed track through the English Channel overnight on Tuesday, November 26th.

The storm provided a good pulse of south west swell for the south coast of England and also brought favourable, offshore wind on Wednesday as the storm tracked into the southern North Sea.

Not much from Conall, but more from a low after.

When it comes to the cold, there’s an old Norwegian saying that goes: “There’s no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothes.” In other words, it’s not the snow’s fault you didn’t bring 8mm booties and an insulated changing poncho. We know there’s nothing dreamier than a tropical boat trip in the Ments — but other dreams do exist. Empty, pumping lineups down lonely fjords await. A-frames off misty, forest-lined shores spit for no-one. There’s a reason more and more folks are doing surf charters in the Aleutians.

Surfing’s the easy part — it’s the staying warm and dry that takes a little practice.

The North Shore is our Mecca. The center of the surfing universe. And perhaps more than any other surf zone on earth, the North Shore is all about respect. Respect for the people and the land that was stolen from them. So, leave your ego at home, and slippers at the front door, and you will be welcome, or the very least tolerated.
