A beautiful day at Alder Lake. We couldn't find where the crappie were hiding but this nice smally took me on a ride with my UL rod and 4 lb mono.

Looks like you need a license to fish for Carp now. LOL
Beginning June 6, Washington fishing or shellfishing licenses will be required to fish for freshwater smelt, crawfish, and carp.
Current fishing or shellfishing licenses will be valid, and existing license holders will not see any increased costs. Learn more about the change in our news release: https://wdfw.wa.gov/newsroom/news-release/new-law-requires-recreational-fishing-license-freshwater-smelt-crawfish-and-carp
Found a few in the big lake today. They must be on their spawn as they were shallow. Freaky Franks Jigs in white.
On the fence about pulling the trigger on a Hobie Kayak? Join us in June for a free Demo Day at Steel Lake Park https://www.facebook.com/events/413720081468519/

I had a great time at the Brownlee Crappie Shootout Kayak Fishing Tournament over the weekend. A big shout out to Jed, Justin and the crew for all their hard work putting on another successful event that benefited CASA of Easter Oregon.
We had 80 kayak anglers signed up to compete and the fishing was less than stellar. I was humbled to come in 5th place which never would have happened had I not secured a loaner hawg trough measuring stick for the tournament. I left mine home by mistake. Dino came through with a loaner for me!
A big congratulations to Jim Davis who seems to come close every year in winning the belt buckle and 2024 was his year. And like Ricky Bobby says "If You Ain't First .. Your Last" :)
The night before the tournament Jim interviewed Jed and I for his up and coming podcast. His goal was to interview the winner of the tournament the next day. I suppose he's going to be talking to himself quite a bit this evening.
The event was a lot of fun and the food this year was extra spectacular. Dino and his crew roasted a whole pig and there were some great Hawaiian sides to accompany the pork.
As I've said before, if you enjoy kayak fishing and are looking for a fun road trip surrounded by amazing folks, then put this on your calendar for next year!
Pre fishing the Brownlee Crappie Shootout. Fishing was slow today. Supposed to blow tomorrow. Nice to shake hands with an old friend .
Well of course we knew that!
Stay protected from the elements with our favorite fishing hats for 2024. Top picks include Shelta, Columbia, Simms and more.
My photo memories are telling me to chase Springtime bass. When this fish rolled on my Keitech Swim bait at the edge of the weeds line I about crapped myself.

Thought I'd share some trout pics my buddy, Tyler Krick, shared with me. The trout at Alder Lake are foraging on juvenile white crappie. That's something you don't see everyday!
Area 11 - Blackmouth.
Looks like WDFW found 4 more Northern Pike in the San Juan lake by setting gill nets out
WDFW crews this week netted four northern pike out of the San Juan Island lake where an angler caught one last month.
Pike in the news...
A teenage angler caught a northern pike at a pond on the west side of San Juan Island, and WDFW crews will gillnet the waters starting as early as next week to eradicate any others illegally introduced there.
If you missed my interview on The Outdoor Line Radio Show yesterday - I won't blame you for sleeping in... It's now available online where you listen to your favorite podcasts

Nice write up on Jim Davis' annual Winter Walleye Social in Kayak Angler Magazine Put it on your calendar for next year. Big thanks to Mack's Lure for the support and Shelta Hats for making me pop! :)
The semi-annual event started as a small gathering of three or four fishing enthusiasts and evolved into a social event attracting 50 to 80 anglers.
This Saturday (if 6am you're an early riser) tune in to The Outdoor Line Radio Show on ESPN 710AM Radio. I'll be sitting down with hosts Tom Nelson & Joey Pyburn to talk about a few under the radar fisheries in Western Washington. Like these Purple Barred Sea Perch! These feisty fish are like bluegill on steroids! And they are open year round in Puget Sound!
In case you missed my interview over the weekend on KJR Radio, I sat down with John Kruse of Northwestern Outdoors Radio to talk Lake Sammamish Cutthroat Trout Fishing before my seminar at the Washington Sportsman's Show. You'll find me around the 17 minute mark.

These bees can't seem to get enough of me. I'm not sure if this one came out of a swarm that was in a tree a week ago or if these are other bees.. Either way tonight I shook them into a new box. #honeybees #beeswarm #,pollenators
Spring Vertical Jigging for Black Crappie here in the Pacific NW. The water temps are still chilly at 51 degrees. This slab was cruising open water but couldn't resist the fall of my Eurotackle ZViber lipless crankbait. When I tossed her back, she kicked a little bit and swam away. Just in time escape the two eagles that tried grabbing a free meal #crappie #jigging #humminbirdhelix9

If you haven't tried Carp fishing it can be a lot of fun. In Washington State you don't need a fishing license to target Carp. Some lakes it's legal to chum these fish to bring them into a given area. Grab some bread, Corn, Boilies and your favorite rod! #carpfishing #lakewashington #carp #commincarp
You may be familiar with the phrase "video game fishing". In the winter time it should be easy to break down smaller lakes and find where those bigger crappie are staging. Crappie are low light feeders and feed upward so presenting a jig above them and seeing what their responses on your finder will help catch fish. I'm using an 1/8th oz jig head and a Freaky Franks plastic. Don't wait to feel the bite but instead watch the tip of your rod as the fish gets close. It's a cat and mouse game. #crappie #crappiefishing iefishing #humminbirdfishing #freakyfranks
Lead Core Line. What is it? Why aren't you using it? Over the years I've taught many anglers how.to put more fish in the kayak/boat using lead core line. We'll get into a discussion tomorrow at the Washington Sportsman's Show at 3pm. Learn how to effectively target cutthroat trout, rainbows, browns, Mackinaw and get down to the depths you need to present your lure.
Cutthroat Trout Fishing on Lake Sammamish is 🔥 this time of year! Join me to learn more on how to target these wild fish! 🎣 Mark your calendars for Friday, February 2nd at 3:00 p.m. I'll be doing a seminar at the Washington Sportsman Show in Puyallup at the Washington State Fairgrounds. 🗓️ 🎡 I will be covering how to target cutthroat trout in Lake Sammamish. My preferred method for targeting these fish is trolling leadcore line but also have a couple of tips for folks using downriggers. Stop by and say hello. I'd love to see you! #kayakfishing #cutthroattrout #wildtrout #lakesammamish #seminar #sportsshows

9 Cutthroat released on Lake Sammamish. The secret? Trolling Lead Core Line and this Tasmanian Devil lure (Christmas Tree Pattern) 🎄 Join me Friday ,February 2nd at 3PM at The Washington Sportsman's Show in Puyallup where I'll be sharing more about this great winter fishery. #cutthroattrout #tasmaniandevillures #catchandrelease #troutfishing #lakesammamish #christmastree #kayakfishing
A little rain brings out the mushrooms. While it was tough picking today, we did end up with a few Lobster Mushrooms. These are actually a parasitic mushroom that attacks a Rusulla mushroom underground my Find one and you'll likely find a few more. While I typically dehydrate these and turn them into a dust, I think Ill dice these up and make into an Indian Tika Masala. Thanks @langdoncook for the inspiration. #lobstermushrooms #foraging #pacificnorthwest
