Skywarn is a program created by the National Weather Service whose purpose is, above all, to save lives and property. The idea behind this program is to have NWS-trained weather spotters look for the visible signs of severe weather in their area and report these sightings directly to the local NWS Field Office or go through an Amateur Radio Net. Ottawa County Skywarn is an organization composed of

interested individuals whose major purpose is to provide volunteer county wide severe weather spotting services.

***Sandusky County Skywarn has agreed to assist Ottawa County Skywarn while Ottawa County is in a building phase and on our way to be an independent Skywarn group.

Today could be a repeat of yesterday with strong to severe storms possible in the afternoon. We are under a marginal risk of severe weather with high winds being the main threat. Any storm that forms will be capable of downbursts, which is what created the strong winds and damage seen in the area yesterday.

Please come join members of Ottawa County, Ohio ARES and Ottawa County, Ohio Skywarn at Hopfinger Zimmerman Memorial Park 4909 W Oak Harbor Southeast Rd on Saturday June 22. Please stop by and see what each of our groups is about and learn about amateur radio.

Today will be a hot one. Highs will be around 90. There is a marginal risk of severe storms this evening into the early overnight hours. The main risk is high winds but the overall risk for any storms is fairly low, around 40%. Friday and Saturday look fantastic with highs around 80 each day with mostly sunny skies.

Sunday starts a prolonged period of hot weather with a high on Sunday around 90. Most, if not all of next week will have highs of 90 or above, possibly mid to upper 90s on a few days.

Get ready for a 𝐁𝐎𝐎𝐌!

The 180th Fighter Wing will conduct a functional check flight today, June 12, 2024, between 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

While the actual flight will take place around the Bowling Green and Toledo, Ohio area, residents across Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan may hear a sonic boom once supersonic speeds are reached.

A functional check flight is conducted following heavy maintenance on the aircraft, putting the aircraft through strenuous testing and maneuvers to ensure all systems of the aircraft function properly and ensuring mission readiness, before putting the aircraft back into operational rotation.

These flights normally occur above an altitude of 30,000 feet, but area residents may still hear the sonic boom.

Although scheduled for this afternoon, the flights could be delayed or cancelled due to weather.

The 180FW appreciates the continued support from the citizens of Ohio as we continue to train in support of our missions.

10/06/2024

Nothing too exciting to report in regards to the weather for the next several days. Today will be cool for this time of year with highs near 70. The next chance of rain will be late Thursday into early Friday. A possible heatwave will start Sunday into next week with several days of highs in the 90's.

26/05/2024

A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for parts of Ohio. Ottawa County is not currently included but Wood County is. Don't let the fact that Ottawa County is not in the watch let you lessen your guard for severe weather. The chance remains for severe weather as the line of storms in Indiana has been getting stronger with winds approaching 70 MPH in spots. The highest risk is south of us but again, the chance remains for severe weather in this area.

The risk of severe weather has trended up since yesterday. We are now under a slight risk of severe weather with all hazards possible. Wind is the highest risk, but large hail and a isolated tornado cannot be ruled out. A line of storms will impact the area between 5PM-8PM. Tomorrow there is a small chance of showers/storms but severe weather is not expected. If needed, Ottawa County Skywarn will have their severe weather net up on 442.2500 + PL 100.0. All amatuer radio operators are welcome to give reports and if you are not an amatuer radio operator, put 442.2500 in a scanner to listen. Check back this afternoon for another update.

25/05/2024

It *MAY* be an active weather weekend through Monday. There is a slight chance of an isolated storm later today although the chance is higher to the east. There is also a marginal risk of severe weather to our east today. Tomorrow, there is a marginal risk of severe weather for Ottawa County. There may be two rounds of storms tomorrow with the first round in between 6PM-10PM and the possible second round overnight into Monday morning. The main risks are wind and hail although a much higher risk of severe weather is to our southwest tomorrow. Unfortunately there is a chance of showers/storms on Memorial Day. It's looking more likely that tonight will be dry but there is the ever so slight chance of a shower/ storm. We are under a marginal risk of severe weather tomorrow with the main risk being strong winds. The slight risk area has moved to our east. The latest models have the storms forming to our east so we may miss out completely. Check back tomorrow morning for updates.

21/05/2024

During this sad time for the Brough family and the Carroll Township Fire and Rescue Department, on behalf of every member of Ottawa County ARES and Skywarn we extend our deepest sympathies and stand in unity with you. Our prayers are yours today and moving forward.

21/05/2024

There is a very slight chance of severe weather late tonight into the early morning hours of Wednesday. The threat of severe weather for the daylight hours of Wednesday appears to be to our east. We will have an update on any potential severe weather later this evening.

21/05/2024

Today was a tale of two stories, depending on which side of the county you were. From Oak Harbor to the east, you saw plenty of rain, lightning, and thunder. West of Oak Harbor saw little, if any rain today. There are some showers/storms to the west but they should die out before they reach the area. Tomorrow during the daylight hours will be dry and hot with highs around 90. There is a chance for some showers and storms in the middle of the night tomorrow night. This will most likely be in the form of a dying line of storms that may contain some gusty winds. There is a slight chance of severe weather on Wednesday with high winds and hail being the main risk right now. These storms should be in the evening on Wednesday.

19/05/2024

Widely scattered showers/storms are slowly moving to the southeast right now. It is likely that these will die out before they reach the area but there is a small chance they hold together. If they do reach the area, it would be after 9 PM. Tomorrow and Tuesday look like repeats of today, small chances of showers/storms and highs in the upper 80's to low 90's. Right now the Storm Prediction Center has a slight risk of severe weather for Ottawa County on Wednesday. Please look for updates on the potential for severe weather over the next few days.

16/05/2024

It's been pretty quiet weather wise and for the most part, that will continue. There is a chance of showers/storms on Friday and a smaller chance on Saturday. Chance of rain returns next Tuesday and Wednesday. Temperatures will be seasonable in the 70's or low 80's. No severe weather is expected for the next week.

11/05/2024

If you missed it last night, tonight will bring another opportunity to see the northern lights across the area. Clouds should clear after 10 PM through at least 2 AM. It may not be as strong as last night, but the geomagnetic storm has continued throughout the day and will continue into tomorrow.

Do yourself a favor and get outside. This is from near the lakeshore.
