We are pleased to announce the 2024 winner of the Dolphy Prize, Micah Ballard. Ballard is pursuing a double major in Music Composition and Game Design at Miami University (class of 2025).

His winning work, Forest Fantasie, is scored for flute, clarinet/bass clarinet, percussion, guitar and piano. It was described by one Dolphy Prize reviewer as “evocative, catchy, and conceived with considerable imagination.”

We are delighted to announce the release of "Bass Camp," a new method book for bass clarinet, by Dr. Erin Cameron. This method is intended for high school and collegiate players, or those who are new to the bass clarinet. All of the exercises can be played on a low E-flat instrument. The goal of this method is to deepen the musicianship of the bass clarinetist.

We thank Dr. Timothy Bonenfant for sharing the following notes about his arrangement of the cello sonata Op.46 by Louise Farrenc for bass clarinet and piano, which we've just added to the catalog!

Louise Farrenc (1804-1875) had an incredible career for a woman of her era as a performer, teacher, and composer. She studied at the Paris Conservatoire, despite not being allowed to officially join classes. In 1842, she became the only woman faculty member at the Conservatoire as Professor of Piano, where she remained until just before her death.

This cello sonata suits the bass clarinet incredibly well. It treats the cello as a single-line melodic instrument, eschewing the possibilities of multiple stops and pizzicato passages. This is music that is all about a long melodic line, making its transfer to a wind instrument a smooth one. Its range also fits easily into that of the bass clarinet, although I have given the bass clarinetist the option of using the low C in a few select spots if the player’s instrument has an extended lower range.

We are delighted to welcome American composer Joseph Hallman to our catalog with the publication of his Concerto for bass clarinet - with more of his bass clarinet works to come in 2025! We thank the composer for sharing this program note about the work, which is scored for solo bass clarinet, trumpet, trombone, tuba, violin, viola, and bass:

I wrote this Bass Clarinet Concerto in 2007 for Calvin Falwell, who premiered it with members of the Philadelphia Orchestra. The work is neoclassical, featuring three movements in a traditional fast-slow-fast structure. The fast movements highlight the bass clarinet's virtuosic range, while the slow movement explores its melodic and expressive capabilities in the high register. This concerto, along with similar works for English Horn and Tuba, was composed during a period of intensive chamber music writing, all written for/premiered by members of the Philadelphia Orchestra.

We thank Dr. David Cook for sharing this note about his transcription of Hindemith's Kanonische Sonatine for two clarinets.

Paul Hindemith composed his Kanonische Sonatine (Sonatine in Canon Style), op. 31 no. 3 for two flutes in 1923. As the title implies, the three movements rely heavily on canonic imitation between the two clarinets. In the first movement, Hindemith has the second voice enter at the interval of a major third, with the second and third movements featuring the interval of a major second and perfect fifth, respectively. In this transcription, I have retained the tonal centers from Hindemith’s original, making it possible to perform the Kanonische Sonatine as a flute-clarinet duo by combining this publication with the original version for flute and adjusting appropriately for balance between the different instruments.

Celebrate the Christmas season with a jazz-infused medley of It Came Upon the Midnight Clear and God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen for clarinet quartet (3 b-flat clarinets, bass clarinet) by American composer Pete Pecora. The medley begins with a traditional arrangement of Midnight Clear with hints of the jazz flavors to come. Things really get going with God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen which bounces back and forth between 3/4 and 5/4 with jazz harmonies and rhythms. Music for a December Evening brings a fresh interpretation of these beloved hymns for your Christmas concerts.
