In Memoriam of Louis Gosset Jr.

Louis Gossett Jr. was a highly accomplished American actor who began his acting career on stage at age 17. He successfully auditioned for the Broadway play Take a Giant Step. He went on to perform in several critically acclaimed plays, including A Raisin in the Sun, The Blacks, Tambourines to Glory, and The Zulu and the Zayda.

In 1977, Gossett gained widespread recognition for his role in the popular miniseries 'Roots,' for which he won the Outstanding Lead Actor award for a Single Appearance in a Drama or Comedy Series at the Emmy Awards.

Gossett's acting career spanned multiple mediums, including films, TV shows, plays, and video games. In 1982, his exceptional talent was recognized with the highest honor in the film industry- the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, for his role in 'An Officer and a Gentleman.' This historic win made him the first African-American actor to receive this prestigious award, a testament to his groundbreaking contributions to the industry.

Apart from his successful acting career, Gossett was also deeply committed to social causes. In the 1990s, he co-founded the Eracism Foundation, a cause close to his heart. This foundation aimed to combat racism, an issue that Gossett himself had experienced during his time in Hollywood, making his involvement all the more personal and impactful. 🕊🕊

Motion Picture Academy Creates Casting Category, First New Competitive Oscar Since 2001

After years of effort to establish a competitive Oscar for Casting Directors, they have finally succeeded. A new Oscar category for Achievement in Casting will be introduced at the 98th Annual Academy Awards for films released in 2025. This will be the first new category added to the Oscars since Best Animated Feature Film was created in 2001, bringing the total number of categories to 24.

The Television Academy has already had Emmys for Casting Directors, so this move by AMPAS seems long overdue. The category rules for eligibility and voting for the inaugural award will be announced in April 2025, along with the complete 98th Academy Awards Rules. The Academy's Board of Governors and its administrative leadership will determine the specifics of the award's presentation at a later date. 🎬🏆

🎊🌟 The color of success? Purple! 'The Color Purple' dazzles with a spectacular $18.1 million on Christmas Day, making it the most-watched film opening since 2009! 🎥💜

On Christmas Day, Warner Bros. had a successful box office performance, dominating the charts with their new movie release, "The Color Purple," which earned $18.1 million. This opening was the second-highest in box office history, trailing only behind "Sherlock Holmes," which opened in 2009 with $24.6 million.

"The Color Purple" marks a much-needed comeback for movie musicals. With older audiences returning to theaters after staying home due to COVID-19 concerns, "The Color Purple" will likely have a long and successful theatrical run over the next month, possibly longer.
