Last week felt like a blur.

Monday was an early one, as were Wednesday and Thursday. Between all the loading in and loading out, we captured some really great content. We made some new friends and we picked up where we left off with old friends. We did the work and, as always, we had an awesome time together.

We’re excited to have wrapped the first big video and photo production of the year and are equally as excited to jump into the edits.

Day 1 with went by in a flash.

We had a day and a half blocked off for this portion of the shoot, but thanks to excellent preparation by everyone involved, we wrapped in a day.

Things don’t always go as planned, but that’s not always a bad thing. We’re thankful for an awesome team, trusting clients, and the extra time we gained to prepare for shoots in the days to follow.

Traveling to Oregon to shoot for 4 days was an awesome time. We always walk away from shoots with new knowledge, and maybe even a few stories. Today we will be sharing some of that knowledge.

Here is what we learned:

- Working with a great team with great attitudes makes every day enjoyable.
- It’s good to have a game plan, but being able to pivot quickly if need be is a must.
- The right gear makes all the difference (even if it gets left off the grip truck for a day or so).
- It’s best if you leave your ego in the terminal.
- Two coffees a day (minimum) is completely necessary.
- Carrying video gear down 16 flights of stairs in the pitch-black dark at 5:30 in the morning is not ideal, but it is achievable.

We learned so much more, but these are some of the highlights that stand out from our time. We are lucky and beyond grateful that we get to do this work alongside so many like-minded people.

We have a lot of fun thinking through and lighting scenes. This particular project with .and.harbor called for us to use almost every light that we have.

Because the space we were shooting in had so many awesome details, we wanted to bring the light in the entire room up to minimize contrast and shadows, and make those details pop.

Having a variety of lighting and diffusion options helps us so much when trying to tell a client’s story well.

The way that you light a scene or subject plays a huge part in how that scene is interpreted by the viewer.

This particular scene for our friends at UIDP called for a clean, well-lit, corporate look. This meant using a high-key light to minimize shadows and contrast on our subject. The challenge for us was to create a well-balanced image while having the light on the subject mimic the ambient light coming in the windows.

It’s a great feeling when all the planning from preproduction comes together for the start of a new project.

If you want to tell someone’s story well, there is a lot of thought and planning that goes in to that. What are their likes? What are their dislikes? What makes them tick as a brand? Who are they as people?

Last week we had our first full day of production with .and.harbor . While we have a good idea of what this brand represents and how we want to capture and tell their story, we are continuing to learn new things about them and will constantly be asking ourselves the afore mentioned questions in order to make their project great.

Every great movie you’ve ever seen has a great storyline, right? We were lucky enough to tell the story of how one such movie was made.

For this project we found ourselves on a chicken farm in Albemarle, NC on the set of summer film “The Grand Strand.”

Although it would appear to be a typical film set, this set was far from normal. Through their Get On Set Program, Local Cinema Studios partners with the South Carolina Film Commission and to combine university students with industry professionals to give students real world experience in their field of study.

For a couple of film geeks like ourselves, it’s been an incredible time not only getting to see how the film is made, but also getting to capture the student’s experiences as they learn from these industry professionals.
