In the spirit of the holiday, this post showcases 2 american classic in the studio locker.
First is a 1950's with windscreen . It is a uni-directional ribbon microphone. These can handle high spl sources. These were made for film and TV broadcasts in the 50's. It has a blast filter that protects the ribbon from sounds such as gun blasts, snare hits, etc. The frequency response is controlled by the settings on the back. (M) is full range and (V1&V2) have an incremental bass roll off. I have got incredible acoustic guitar sounds with it. These also sound good on electric guitars, drums, etc.

Second is the Shure 546 Unidyne III. The holy grail of the sm57 lineage. They are the top of the line version of the 545 with a bigger transformer. They also have an impedence switch and a shock mounted base. This one handles all my snare or guitar duties. It's truly a great sounding mic!

Fun session today! Trying out some new gear! Got a 50s RCA Bk5 and a 70's Shure 546 unidyne III (holy grail 57) in from about 20 min before the session! Threw em up and was blown away. Also got 60s beyerdynamic m160s on the acoustic (for options) along with a R88 for the room. Trying new things on vocals and pulled out an AKG C414 EB. Also trying out the new popfilter from Hakan. I never have time for pictures, during sessions and usually forget to take pictures after so sorry for no action shots.

Chains were
M160s- AEA RPQ2- Distressors
RCA BK5- RCA MI-12160A
AEA R88- API 3124
AKG C414EB - BAE 1073- Tube Tech PE1C- Black Lion Bluey

Todays post features my favorite vintage piece and the most important mic in the studio-the talkback mic

First is a 1940s Altec 639a. This mic has both a ribbon and dynamic element that can be used seperate or combined for different vibes and polar patterns. It is a heavy mama jama that needs a really sturdy stand. It sounds wonderful on upright bass, drums and as an old school vocal. They were a staple for live a studio use thru the 60's. It has some wear but functions perfectly for an 80 yr old mic. The yoke is also original, and although it shows some rust, it functions perfectly.

Second is a 60's Telefunken D11b that I mainly use as a talkback. It was sold as a table top mic for dictation recording. It has a colored sound/ grainy texture that can be perfect for shakers and other aux percussion. I have the original box and paperwork that came with it, which makes it a cool vintage piece

Took a few weeks off from these posts. But here we go back exploring the at the studio.
It's a full post!
First, the classic large diaphragm condenser. Great on most sources but really shines as a vocal mic for certain voices, not all.
Second is a stereo pair of ! These classic small diaphram condensers are great on just about anything. Acoustic guitars, drums, banjo, piano mandolin, etc.

In this weeks exploration of my at the studio, here's some mics that get used very often.
First is a 60's B&O BM4 ribbon microphone made in Denmark. These inspired the design of the Royer121. They sound great on guitars!
2nd is an assorted group of variations. The silver ones are Shure 545's from the 60's. These sound way better than the modern 57s. More open sounding and a nice top end.

In this weeks exploration of the at the studio, I've got the rest of the section.

First is a Beyerdynamic M260 from the 60's.
This would have been made in the first few years of production. M260’s have single ribbons, as opposed to M160’s, which have two. The M260 has a real hick low end and a slight roll off in the highs.
Second is a stereo pair of Beyerdynamic M260N's from the 70's with original case and paperwork.
These sound great on drum overheads, guitar amps, strings etc.

Today's session inspired this weeks post.
A 50's RCA SK-46. These small ribbon pack a big, smooth sound, with a slightly dark character.

It was the centerpiece of today's session recording banjo with the master . The RCA was put through a 1960's RCA tube mic pre and into the , a tube compressor. Absolutely golden chain to match the 1950's banjo Matt was ripping on!
I supplemented the SK-46 with the 2 mics from last weeks post. Those went through an AEA RPQ2 pre amps followed by .

As I continue to explore my , we take a stroll down Beyer Boulevard. 4 mics , 2 models, let's go!

First is a 60's m160. This hypercardiod ribbon microphone is Beyer's most famous. It has a dual ribbon element, which is 2 ribbons stacked on top of each other, giving it more depth. The m160 has a smooth and slightly dark frequency response. They are great on overheads and guitars.

Second is also a 60's Beyerdynamic m160 that was rebranded by another German company, Strasser.

Third, we have a stereo pair of 60's Beyerdynamic 818 dynamic microphones. These budget friendly mics are thick, punchy, slightly dark and excel on toms, gtrs, horns etc. A great versitile option to use in place of 421s, 57s, etc.

As I continue to document my , this post has a classic dynamic stereo pair and a modern ribbon.

421-U5 dynamic stereo pair. These were made in Germany in the 80's with consecutive serial numbers. I like these on toms, horns, bass and electric guitar. They are classic microphones for a reason and are common in most recording studios.

AEA R92 ribbon microphone. It's a modern ribbon that is made to be positioned close to the source. It can take wind blasts (unlike most ribbons) and loud spl's. It's has more high end than your usual ribbon. I like these on guitar amps really close to the grill.

In this weeks post, we have 3 pretty sweet mics from the studio locker.

First is a pair of AKG 414EB-P48. These were made in the 80s and feature the nylon ck12 capsule. When I got the first one, I loved it so much that I had to find another that matched well for a pair. I was able to find another with a close serial number, only 160 units apart, 24019/ 24179. These were most likely made within days of each other. They match perfectly in freq response for capturing stereo sources. I love these on any source!

Second is an Electro-Voice 635a. It's an omni directional dynamic microphone from the 70's. The grill has a dent, however it doesn't affect the sound. These were widely used for broadcast along with studio applications due to it's bright, yet natural tone. When you watch press conferences, interviews, etc from the 70's, you can see these in action frequently. They are a nice option for drum room/overhead, guitars, vocals and horns.

This week's post features 2 very versatile microphones from the studio's collection.

First is the AEA R88. This natural sounding stereo ribbon is used on almost every session here at the studio. Pairing it with AEA's preamp takes this mic to the next level! Whether I'm recording drums, acoustic guitar, piano, stings, horns, etc, the R88 will be there.

Second is the RE10 from the 70's. This cardiod dynamic microphone is a great utility mic that sounds great on most sources. Its frequency response is rather smooth with great midrange that translates well.

In this weeks post, of exploring the at the studio, we have something new and vintage.
First is ! This tube condenser microphone is inspired by the Neumann u47 from the 50s. It has a nice low end along with a lovely open top end. My favorite on vocals!
The second is a pair of Lustraphone VR64 ribbon microphones made in England in the 1950's. These "ribbonettes" pack a big sound with a nice thick low end. I like them on drums, guitars and horns.

As we explore my , todays post is all about the vintage MD407.
The 402/1 capsule found in these MD407 is the precursor to the 402/3 found in the famous !
A vintage MD409 will set you back about $800, while these with a very similar capsule, run around $400!
They are awesome on guitar amps with lots of midrange detail.

First is a 1950's Sennheiser MDS1 with original box. This stereo microphone can also be used as 2 separate mono microphones!
Second is a 1960's Sennheiser MD407 that was rebranded by a NY based company "Fisher".

As we journey deeper into my this week, it's all about fun stuff. First off is a Universal 5MM Velocity Microphone from the 30's. They made microphones and broadcast gear. It's almost 100 years old, so it has been serviced and ready to go! Great thick sound.
Second is the by , a moving coil, with the capsule in the rear of the chamber. Has that ole time radio sound. Really fun for vocals and as a "wet" mic for effects on various sources.

See y'all next week!

This week, in our journey through my , we enter the dimension of dynamic .
First, we have an D88 stereo dynamic microphone from the 60s!! Great flavor for stereo applications, drums, room, etc.
The second mic from the is a staple around many studios for a reason, the ! Great natural sounding dynamic with little to no proximity effect. I love these on trumpet and trombone, among many other uses.

I have been exploring the lately on my stories and figured I'd start posting them as a "post". Am I just taking inventory or nerding out on gear? Either way, tonight, we venture down the center of condenser ally!
Stereo pair of SA-67. These tube microphones are inspired by the . I love these on vocals! They sound great on any source that you are seeking the condenser qualities from.
