In his first apostolic exhortation, Pope Leo XIV has taken up the call of Pope Francis for Christians to see in the poor the very face of Christ — and to be a church that “walks poor with the poor” in order to authentically live out the Gospel.

“Dilexi Te” (“I Have Loved You”) was publicly released Oct. 9, having been signed on Oct. 4, the feast of St. Francis of Assisi.

When Father Peter Do arrived in Louisville in May 1990 at the age of 17, the city felt like a “promised land” after a long period of waiting.

Father Do, his parents and his five older siblings, natives of Vietnam, had been waiting to come to the United States for six or seven years, he said in a recent interview.

Father Do, pastor of St. Michael Church in Jeffersontown, and his family were resettled by Catholic Charities’ Migration and Refugee Services. The department, formed in 1975, is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.

"As a child preparing for my First Holy Communion, I recall going to Tonini’s with my mom to pick out my first rosary. I selected one with iridescent ruby-red beads, a shiny little treasure that I still have to this day. It was the first Catholic “thing” that I ever owned.

This month of October is designated by the Church as the month of the holy rosary. Consequently, Pope Leo has encouraged the faithful to make a special effort to pray the rosary every day.

Why should we consider doing so?"

Arranged in the shape of a rosary, children took turns leading the prayers of the Glorious Mysteries of the rosary during the 74th annual Living Rosary on Oct. 5 at St. Michael Catholic Parish.

A crowd of hundreds prayed, listened to Scripture readings, reflected on a homily and sang in prayer as Archbishop Shelton J. Fabre crowned a statue depicting Our Lady of Fatima. The centerpiece of the event was the prayers led by children, each representing a bead of the rosary.

The Living Rosary is organized by the Archdiocese of Louisville Marian Committee. It is hosted each year on the first Sunday in October, the month dedicated to the holy rosary.
