A hurricane and storm surge watches have been issued for parts of the Florida Gulf Coast on Tuesday morning as Potential Tropical Cyclone Nine moves closer to the Florida coastline, according to the National Hurricane Center.

As of the 8 a.m. ET advisory from the hurricane center, the storm was located about 150 miles west of Grand Cayman with maximum sustained winds of 35 mph. The system is moving northwest at about 9 mph, and this motion is expected through Tuesday night, followed by a faster northward to north-northeastward motion on Wednesday and Thursday, according to the NHC.

An area of thunderstorms in the Caribbean is expected to develop into Hurricane Helene and rapidly intensify over the exceptionally warm Gulf of Mexico before slamming into the United States’ Gulf Coast later this week as a major hurricane.

The storm has not formed yet but is expected to soon, so the NOAA NWS National Hurricane Center has dubbed it Potential Tropical Cyclone Nine to warn of its imminent threat.

The Hurricane Hunters will fly into the storm on Monday to gather data and determine if the storm has a closed center of circulation. Although the storm is not yet classified as a tropical depression, all the necessary conditions are present, such as warm water and a decreasing wind shear.

The environment suggests that the storm has the potential to develop into a tropical storm and possibly a major hurricane as it moves through the Gulf of Mexico. As of 11 a.m. on Monday, Potential Tropical Cyclone Nine had winds of 30 miles per hour and was moving north at about six miles per hour. It is expected to become a Category 1 hurricane by 8 a.m. on Wednesday as it passes through the Yucatan Channel.

Once named, it will be called Helene.

The push to move the Jacksonville Fair Grounds cleared a major hurdle this week, with the new site near the Equestrian Center officially approved for construction to begin.
Construction could begin in as soon as two or three weeks, but it’s likely to be a bit longer than first expected before the first fair held at the new location.
These renderings of the planned 82-acre facility on the Westside show what the new fairgrounds will look like, complete with 50 acres of parking, a pond and several buildings.

On September 24, 2023, a shooting investigation was conducted in the 100 block of 4th Avenue North. On September 25, 2023, members of the Jacksonville Beach General Investigations Unit and SWAT team made contact with the suspect, Akiyah D. Price, at her residence. Price was taken into custody at approximately 2:54 AM on that date, without incident. Price was charged with Murder, Florida State Statute 782.04(2).

On September 19, 2024, Jacksonville Beach Police Department Detective LaMont attended the court hearing for the defendant where she pled guilty to 2nd Degree Murder with a sentence of 10 to 40 years. Price's sentencing hearing will be December 20, 2024.

Detective LaMont, along with the entire General Investigation Unit, worked tirelessly alongside the SAO to get a guilty plea in less than one calendar year.

Outstanding police work by our detectives, crime scene investigators and responding patrol officers from the evening of the incident through this guilty plea.
