There is "chatter" on social media about the wildfire that torched 50 acres of Pickens County this past weekend.

We decided to ask the experts at the Fire Department. Here is what they told us:

"No re-ingnition. We walked the fire break and found that there are stumps and deadfall in the "black" area that will continue to smolder for days. They found no active fire outside of the fire break cut in by Georgia Forestry.

"We anticipate more calls to the area as the burned area continues to emit smoke but as of now, there appears to be no fire outside the affected area. Fire danger is still moderate and we caution anyone attempting outdoor burning."

In honor of Wendy’s nationally recognized “Give Something Back” Day on November 14, the Jasper Wendy's Restaurant will be showcasing Baking to Beat Cancer!

Wendy’s locations all over the country use this day each year to increase their charitable giving and community outreach, giving back in honor of founder Dave Thomas and his legacy of generosity and compassion. Lisa Lacheny is proud, "For me, to be chosen is such a huge honor, one I don’t take lightly!"

You may have noticed flyers popping up around town advertising this event. There are brochures and donation jars at the Wendy’s itself, all in recognition and support of Lisa's little home bakery.

On Thursday, Nov. 14 from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m., Lisa will be set up beneath her yellow tent outside the Jasper Wendy’s, selling freshly baked treats, including her “Thanksgiving Leftovers” trays. She's bringing those back a few weeks early, solely for this event. Various kits and mixes will also be available, and she’ll be taking holiday preorders.

"I hope you’ll come out and see me then! It’s been such a humbling experience to be approached with this opportunity, and to see those in management roles express their excitement to help Baking to Beat Cancer. I look forward to being a part of that continued legacy of generosity Dave Thomas created, she said.

Wendy’s • 1853 Hwy 53 W. • Jasper, Ga.

Thursday, Nov. 14 • 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

"I’m just so excited to be given this opportunity!" Lisa said. "It’s been such a humbling experience so far, to be recognized for what it is I do, and to be featured as part of Wendy’s 'Give Something Back' Day."

She’ll be set up at the corner, under the big sign. Just look for the yellow tent and the “Big Cookie.”

"Baking to Beat Cancer" was inspired by Lisa's mom. In 2009, Lisa Lacheny’s family received devastating news. Her mom, Susan Lacheny, was diagnosed with stage three angiosarcoma. Lisa had never heard of it and did what she could to get educated about it. She learned there was basically no hope for her mom, as this form of cancer is incredibly rare, and therefore, has no standard or promising treatment plan.

Sarcomas are cancers of the bone and soft tissue and are seen far more commonly in children. It's estimated that only one percent of adult cancer diagnoses will be a form of sarcoma; from there, only one percent of those will be of the subtype "angiosarcoma", cancer of the lining of the blood vessels.

After being told she had just 9-12 months to live, her mom would couragously go on to surpass her prognosis by years. She finally decided she was too tired to continue fighting and slipped into a coma. On Oct. 2014, five years after her original diagnosis, Susan’s family made the difficult decision to let her be removed her from life support.

To support people like her mom, Lisa came up with the idea of a baking fundraiser. “Baking to Beat Cancer” is more than just a home bakery; it is continuation of her mom's own mission. “It's her legacy, forever intertwined with mine, and a tool in which I can go out into the community and do my part in raising money and awareness of sarcomas and other related cancers,” Lisa says.

Her motto: "My part-time, tiny bakery isn't going to cure cancer. I'm not naive enough to believe anything I do will ever make an real impact . I am not going to change the world. However, I want to be able to leave that world someday, knowing I did everything I possibly could."

We spoke to Tim Prather, chief of the Pickens County Fire Rescue, on Monday morning about the wildfire near the first overlook on Ga-136. He told us, "The wildfire incident was declared contained around 5 a.m. Contained meaning breaks had been established around the main fire but the fire will not be completely extinguished."

Their job is not finished. "When you have a fire like that, you will have smoldering for many days including trees that catch fire," he continued, "We have to keep monitoring the incident for days after the event. Approximately 50 acres are suspected of burning. The precipitation was a blessing yesterday. I may ride up there this morning to see if there are still any smoldering areas…which can happen even after rain."

Thanks to Reed Stone and Chief Don Grant for the photos taken Saturday night.

Downtown Cu***ng was blocked off to motorists by law enforcement vehicles and fire engines battling a fire at Goodson Drug Company on West Maple St. most of Sunday evening. The fire departments brought ladder trucks that doused the rear of the building's roof with water.

Jason Shivers, the Division Chief for Technical Services at Forsyth County Fire Department told us, "This evening, just after 7 p.m., the Forsyth County Fire Department units were dispatched to a reported commercial structure fire at 116 West Maple St. on the downtown square in Cu***ng. The business name is Goodson Drug Company, a well-known family pharmacy and local icon that has been in business for 65 years."

"Upon the arrival of the first fire units, a working structure fire was confirmed in the building," he continued. "Numerous fire department units responded and the fire was brought under control within about an hour. No fire damage is believed to have extended into adjoining businesses although it is likely that they will suffer water and smoke damage. We will have units on scene well into the night performing salvage and overhaul operations."

"It is too early to tell the full extent of damage to the building and its business proper, but the fire investigation is underway, he continued. "Traffic in and around the square was heavily impacted and alternate routes around downtown were needed but that should be improving deeper into the evening. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported. As of this writing, just before 11 p.m., it is still an active incident with a heavy fire department and law enforcement presence still on scene," Shivers concluded.

The iconic drug store is owned by Jimmy Goodson, who is said to be very popular with his customers. The building is on courthouse square and motorists traveling to Cu***ng's stores and hospitals often pass by this landmark with the Coca-Cola logo painted on the side of the pharmacy. It seems that there will be extensive smoke and water damage to the structure.

Big D’s BBQ has closed all locations, we’re told. Also, Goodson’s Drug Company caught on fire Sunday night. Eleven units responded to the historic building on courthouse square in downtown Cu***ng, some as mutual aid from Dawson, Cherokee and Hall Counties, plus Alpharetta, to assist Forsyth County Fire Rescue.

By 10 p.m. the fire was extinguished, leaving the legendary downtown business with smoke and water damage after numerous ladder trucks poured water on the roof of the building.

We heard an update from Pickens County Fire Rescue. Battalion Chief Don Grant told us this morning, "Units continued to battle steep terrain and high winds throughout the night to contain the fire, but the embers jumped the fire break and continued up to Hwy 136."

"PCFR Engines from Stations 2, 5, 8, 11 and Bent Tree, along with multiple units of GA Forestry Commission, were able to make a successful stop at Hwy 136. After 12 hours, we have the fire contained within the new fire break," he continued.

"Some smoldering fire and smoke will continue throughout the morning hours. Units will continue to monitor the area and wind conditions. No homes were damaged, but an estimated 25-30 acres were affected" according to the Chief Grant." according to Chief Grant.

Around 5:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon, a wildfire broke out near the overlook on Hwy 136 in Pickens County. It’s near the Fainting Goat Vineyard.

According to Don Grant, the Pickens Fire Battalion Chief working the "B-Shift, "The fire initially was approximately 5 acres in size. Three stations of Pickens Fire responded to assist the Georgia Forestry Commission in attempting to get the blaze under control while dealing with gusty winds.

Chief Grant told Smoke Signals the fire was about 75 percent contained at 11:30 p.m. "No structures have been involved, although we are actively protecting one structure." He said the fire has involved ten to fifteen acres because of the high winds tonight.

"The fire broke out just past the first overlook on Highway 136 near the first house you come to. It's a very steep incline and a heavily wooded area. The Georgia Forestry Commission firefighters are using bulldozers, and our teams are cutting a line with chainsaws and using backpacks," the Chief continued, "We're probably going to be out here all night."

Pickens County Fire Stations 5, 10 and 11 are working diligently to contain the blaze. So far, they have been successful in protecting the house near the blaze. There is still heavy smoke in the area, and the curious are urged to stay away and let them do their job. Because the smoke is thick, Chief Grant urges those with respiratory issues to stay indoors. Fire Chief Grant took these two photos.
