No one should ever, ever, ever go to the McDonald’s on Macon Rd. They never get an order right, it’s always cold, and they rather serve them selves at night rather than the customer. One time they left me at the window for over 10 minutes. I waited to see how long they would take to come back to the window. They never came back! They never get better only worse. I have given them too many chances. Not going back!!

Grants of $5,000, $10,000 and $15,000 will be distributed to support individual projects across various phases, including pre-production, production and post-production, with final disbursement upon project completion.

“The Local Filmmakers Grant program underscores our commitment to fostering local talent and enhancing the vibrant creative community within Muscogee County,” said Columbus Film Commissioner Joel Slocumb. “We are excited to see the incredible stories that our local filmmakers will bring to the screen with the help of this grant.”

Applicants who meet the Columbus Film Fund’s established criteria will be eligible for grants, which will be awarded in three phases to ensure projects meet all required standards at each stage. WHAT THEY ARE SAYING: Vice President Harris Selects Governor Walz as Running Mate

When Vice President Harris selected Governor Tim Walz as her running mate today, she welcomed to the ticket someone who has dedicated his life to supporting working people, serving our country, and working across party lines to get things done.

A lifelong Midwesterner, Governor Walz enlisted in the Army National Guard when he turned 17, serving for 24 years before retiring as the highest-ranking enlisted National Guard soldier in southern Minnesota. He attended college thanks to the GI Bill and became a high school teacher and football coach, taking his team to the state championship for the first time in the school's history.

For six terms, Governor Walz represented Minnesota’s First Congressional District — a conservative-leaning district where he was only the second Democrat elected since 1890. The son of an Army veteran and a retired Army National Guard member himself, Walz was the ranking member on the House Veterans Affairs Committee, where he passed legislation to help stem veterans’ suicides. As two-term governor of Minnesota, he has done more than any other statewide leader in recent memory to help middle-class families get ahead, signing the largest tax cut in state history, lowering the cost of insulin, and protecting a woman’s right to choose.

BIBB MILLS WORKERS DIAGNOSED WITH CANCER
SECURE CASH BENEFITS FROM MULTIPLE PRIVATE TRUSTS

Federal Courts Require Asbestos Manufacturers to Compensate Cancer Victims

Columbus, GA, -Mill workers employed before 1981 diagnosed with various cancers are entitled to special benefits. Lung cancer, esophageal cancer, laryngeal cancer, pharyngeal cancer, stomach cancer, colon cancer, re**al cancer, and mesothelioma are frequently caused by asbestos exposure. Asbestos-laced products were used for decades at Bibb Mills. Neither employees nor management were aware of the asbestos risk.

Asbestos is a mineral that in its natural state is harmless. It becomes harmful when it is pulled apart or ground up into flexible fibers. Then, when inhaled or swallowed, microscopic asbestos fibers may be permanently affixed to body tissue. Over many years, these fibers may cause genetic changes that can lead to cancer. According to the National Cancer Institute, “It can take from 10 to 40 years or more for asbestos-related cancers to appear.”

To compensate cancer victims and the families of deceased cancer victims, Federal Bankruptcy Courts have required asbestos manufacturers to set aside hundreds of millions of dollars in private trusts. Through these trusts, cancer victims can receive money damages by the filing of timely, detailed, and accurate claims.

Norris Injury Lawyers has announced a specific initiative to assist Bibb Mills employees in recovering money set aside for them in these asbestos trusts. Cancer victims or the families of deceased victims who worked at the mill before 1981 may call 800-478-9578 for a free evaluation of their claim. Additional information is available at getnorris.com/asb.

If you fell ill with asbestos cancer, or asbestos exposure, make sure to call our lawyers. You may be entitled to compensation.

DAVIS BROADCASTING, INC. MOURNS THE LOSS OF
LONG TIME PROMOTIONS MANAGER

COLUMBUS, GA, February 2, 2023: Davis Broadcasting and the entire radio community is saddened by the passing of Karen Lavern Robinson, Promotions Manager for the company. She was a dedicated and hardworking member of the Davis Broadcasting family for almost nine years. Though originally from Chicago, IL, upon Robinson’s arrival in Columbus, GA she quickly learned the lay of the land. She consistently met with the Columbus and Phenix City communities to plan and carry out many successful and impactful events including, her personal favorite, the company’s Annual Toy Giveaway each December.

Karen Robinson embodied radio promotions. Getting her start in radio over 35 years ago with WGCI in Chicago, Robinson then spent time managing promotions at Crawford Broadcasting and Davis Broadcasting Inc. of Columbus.

Karen Lavern was loved and will be missed by her entire radio family. We are grateful for her energy, smart wit, and commitment that she shared generously. Her loss will be felt across our city and throughout the radio community. Our continued prayers are with her family.

A brief celebration of life and balloon release will be held at the Woodruff Riverfront Park on Wednesday February 7, 2024 at 5:00pm.

WINTER WATCH: PROJECT SEEKS MONARCH SIGHTINGS IN SOUTHEAST

SOCIAL CIRCLE, Ga. (Dec. 7, 2023) – You delivered before. Now we need your help again.

Over past winters, volunteers from across the Southeast and Gulf states provided more than 6,700 observations of monarch butterflies. This winter, the partnership of universities, agencies and other organizations called Monarchs Overwintering in Southeastern States is requesting the public’s continued involvement in reporting sightings.
Sonia Altizer, a University of Georgia ecology professor and director of Project Monarch Health, said the information can help scientists determine if these iconic but declining butterflies “can overwinter as non-breeding adults in the southern U.S. and how this might affect future population numbers.” The monitoring will also help document how winter-breeding activity might be affecting the annual migration to Mexico.

Understanding migration and overwintering behavior is crucial to conserving monarchs, a candidate for listing under the Endangered Species Act.
Thousands of monarchs stream across the South each fall on their way to wintering grounds in central Mexico. In the spring, this eastern population of the butterfly returns to the U.S. and Canada to breed.
But not all monarchs migrate to Mexico. Volunteer observations over the past two decades have helped scientists better understand how and why some monarchs breed throughout the winter in the southern U.S. Scattered reports also suggest that some monarchs can overwinter in coastal regions in a non-breeding state, like their wintering behavior in Mexico.

The goal this winter is to collect more data for a growing partnership that includes organizations such as Florida Natural Areas Inventory and the North Carolina Natural Heritage Program.
Gabriela Garrison of the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission said the monarch is a species of greatest conservation need in North Carolina’s Wildlife Action Plan, as in the action plans of many other states. “So, monitoring overwintering populations and learning more about their behavior is critical.”

The public is encouraged to report monarch sightings from Nov. 1-March 1 in Georgia, the Carolinas, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas.

Observations are entered in Journey North’s online data portal, where they are transformed into real-time mapping visualizations of monarch migration and breeding. Journey North is an organization designed to engage people across North America in tracking wildlife migration and seasonal change.
Program coordinator Nancy Sheehan said the public has a long history of being a part of scientific discoveries. “Journey North is excited to provide a platform for engaging volunteers in this targeted monitoring effort.”

Susan Meyers, volunteer from Monarchs Across Georgia agreed. “Volunteers are vital to this effort. If you enjoy being outdoors and exploring your local ecosystem, this is an easy activity that can be done alone or with your family.”

Wildlife biologist Anna Yellin of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources said project partners are grateful to all who reported sightings last winter. “When we come together as a community as we have with this effort, we stand a better chance of protecting the monarch butterfly for future generations.”

HOW TO TAKE PART

• Step 1: Create a free account at journeynorth.org/reg.
• Step 2: Learn how to report monarch sightings at journeynorth.org/monarchs.
• Step 3: From Nov. 1-March 1, submit monarch observations at journeynorth.org/sightings.

Free HIV Testing on
World AIDS Day

World AIDS Day 35: Remember and Commit. This annual event serves as a reminder of the global struggle to end HIV-related stigma, an opportunity to honor those we have lost, and a rallying cry to commit to working toward a day when HIV is no longer a public health threat. The first World AIDS Day took place in 1988, providing a platform to raise awareness about HIV and AIDS and honor the lives affected by the epidemic. This year marks the 35th commemoration of this important day.

The number of people living with HIV in Georgia in 2021 was 59,422. The largest percentage of newly diagnosed people, 37.5%, were 25 to 34 years old.

The only way to know for sure if you have HIV is to get tested. The CDC recommends that all people, aged 13 to 64, be tested at least once as part of their routine care. Knowing your status empowers you to make healthy decisions to prevent getting or transmitting HIV. Advances have been made in HIV treatment and prevention, but people need education about how to protect themselves and others.

Free syphilis testing is being offered along with free HIV testing this year. Testing is easy, confidential, and results are available in about 15 minutes. The locations are:
