If you’re east of I-71 please plan ahead and avoid travel during the storm. We will be out in full force, but with snow this heavy it will accumulate on the roads. Travel will be hazardous. If you must be out, allow plenty of extra time to travel.

Seconds matter in emergencies, and we can’t help you if we can’t find you. Help us out by making sure we can easily see your address from the road in the dark and in bad weather!

Addresses displayed on your house should be clearly displayed with large numbers that contrast from the background and are away from any obstructions and have proper lighting. If you have a mailbox near the street, make sure we can see your address from both sides with reflective numbering and that any nearby landscaping is trimmed.

Need advice on how to display your address? Feel free to stop us on our patrols! We’d be more than happy to assist you.

Please join us is sending condolences to our friends at the Lawrence Township Police Department and the family of Officer Sean VanDenberg, who tragically passed away early this morning after being hospitalized for COVID-19.

Early this morning, we lost Ptl. Sean VanDenberg. He has passed on to patrol the streets in heaven. Sean fought a tough battle, but in the end he was needed somewhere else. Sean was a treasured asset to our department and our community. Sean will be greatly missed and we won’t be able to replace his contagious smile or laughter at the station.

Details will be coming soon for services and a go-fund me page that will be set up in his name to help the family with medical expenses.

When a police officer dies, it is not just those close to him that feel it - it is the entire community that feels that loss. Sean, we love you and we will take it from here.

ARRIVE ALIVE FOR CHRISTMAS & NEW YEAR'S EVE!

Summit County Residents Urged to “Arrive Alive” During Christmas & New Year’s Holidays
Summit County Prosecutor Continues Campaign to Help Keep Drunk Drivers Off The Road

AKRON, Ohio (Friday, December 17, 2021) – Summit County Prosecutor Sherri Bevan Walsh is today re-launching an anti-drunk driving campaign to help keep Summit County roads safe during the Christmas and New Year’s holidays. Arrive Alive is back with free or reduced fare rides home for people who go out and decide to drink alcohol. The campaign coincides with National Impaired Driving Prevention Month.

WHAT: FREE or reduced fare rides home during the Christmas & New Year’s Holidays
WHEN: From 12pm Friday December 24 to 6pm Sunday December 26
AND
From 12pm Friday December 31 to 6pm Saturday January 1, 2022
HOW: 300 one-time use codes for up to $20 off a LYFT ride

“As people slowly begin to gather with family and friends, I don’t want tragedy to shatter their good time. I work hard every day to make Summit County a safer place to live, and that includes keeping drunk or impaired people from getting behind the wheel. Arrive Alive does just that,” said Prosecutor Walsh. “If you decide to celebrate with alcohol, please have a designated driver, or use our Arrive Alive program. The life you save may be your own!”

Summit County residents who need a ride home because they decide to drink alcohol during the Christmas or New Year’s Eve holidays can use a LYFT code for a FREE or reduced fare ride home (up to $20). The codes are only good for the specific period-of-time outlined in the flyer and this news release.

The LYFT code for the Christmas holiday is SUMMITXMAS, and the LYFT code for New Year’s Eve is SUMMITNYE.

Prosecutor Walsh added, “according to Mothers Against Drunk Driving, every two minutes someone is injured in a drunk driving crash and every 51 minutes someone is killed. I hope people make responsible decisions during the holidays and keep the roads safe for everyone. Please be safe for yourself and everyone around you.”

Arrive Alive was launched in Summit County during the July 4th, 2018 holiday weekend. Since then over 2,000 people have used the service.

This fall, our police department was awarded over $15,000 in grant funding from Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost to purchase new bullet-resistant vests for all of our officers. The majority of our officers were wearing vests that had long passed their recommended expiration date. Our officers will begin wearing these new vests tonight.

Some updates on the construction in our area:

Paving on Sanitarium Road is expected to be completed this week. Please remember that Sanitarium Road is 35mph between Canton Road and Flickinger Road and 25mph between Flickinger Road and Ackers Avenue.

Construction work near Canton Road and US-224 is stopping for the winter and the roads are being re-opened. Any traffic wanting to turn left must use one of the designated turnarounds.

SCAM ALERT: We are continuing to get reports of calls made to local residents by scammers posing as our deputies. These scammers are "spoofing" actual Sheriff's Office phone numbers and identifying themselves as actual SCSO staff, and often ask that the recipient return their call regarding some type of "urgent matter." Ultimately, they are trying to convince victims to make some sort of payment over the phone.

To be clear, we DO NOT ask for or accept payments for anything via telephone, PayPal, or other similar services. If you have received such a call and want to verify its legitimacy, you can contact our Dispatch at (330) 643-2181.
