With the presidential election upon us, we are reminded of our right to vote. African Americans did not have this right until 1870 when the 15th Amendment was ratified, preventing the denial of a citizen’s vote based on race, color, or previous condition of servitude (slavery).

The 15th Amendment was the last of the Reconstructive Amendments. For a quick lesson on those amendments, click the link.

The Thirteenth, Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendment make up the Reconstruction Amendments, created to establish equality for black Americans.
