Samuel Cornish was born in Delaware in 1795.

Samuel Cornish was a journalist and minister who founded Freedom’s Journal in 1827 in NYC. Freedom’s Journal was the first African-American owned and operated newspaper in the United States. The purpose was to create a medium to allow African Americans to plead their own cause and fight against the white publications that misrepresented them.

Freedom’s Journal was published weekly and was circulated in 11 states as well as Canada, Haiti, and Europe. Cornish used his position as senior editor to inform the public about the abolitionist movement. He published crimes committed by white people to undo associations of Black people with criminality. He highlighted the births, deaths, and achievements of African Americans in NYC.

Cornish resigned after six months, but after his co-editor John Russwurm began promoting colonization, he returned and replaced Freedom’s Journal with The Rights of All. Although it didn’t survive more than a year, Cornish paved the way for many Black-owned newspapers to follow.

Delilah L. Beasley began her journalism career at the early age of 12 as a correspondent at the Cleveland Gazette, where she wrote about local civic and religious news.

In the early 20th century, Beasley settled in Oakland, California, where she worked as a nurse. While working, Beasley enrolled part-time in history courses and trained herself in historical research by visiting libraries, exploring archives, and conducting oral interviews with black residents about their personal experiences. Beasley took the information she gathered and self-published a book that chronicled Black Americans’ notable achievements in early California.

Beasley became the first Black woman consistently published in a major metropolitan newspaper, the Oakland Tribune. Beasley’s weekly Tribune column covered black regional happenings. The column's influence would positively change how the black community was both perceived and discussed in Oakland.
