A quick throwback to prepping for Jude’s first birthday. One of our favorite things in fall is going to apple orchards and pumpkin patches. It was so much more exciting with a toddler to chase around. Cannot wait to go again this fall and let her pick out some pumpkins to paint!

When we first started with rabbits, I had no clue how I wanted to cook them, I just knew that they were fast and decent converters which made them a good choice on the homestead. Boy was I excited when I discovered I could make garlic parm ‘wings’ with my front rabbit legs. This was one of my first times cooking it that didn’t turn out dry!

This was my simple recipe:

Fully cover the ‘wings’ in avocado oil (this helps keep them from drying out)
Toss with garlic powder, salt, pepper
Put on lined baking sheet and sprinkle with parmesan cheese
Bake at 350 for about 25 mins

This past weekend was also for some spring cleaning! We got the goats winter muck all dug out and moved into our compost area (to be built this weekend). We’re going to continue to add chips to their cleaned out pen as we clear some more trees so our solar panels get full sun this summer.

So excited that it’s seed starting time! Started 36 sweet walla walla onions, 12 carenten leeks, 12 lady lavender, and 12 utah tall celery. When these start popping up we’ll move them into 4 inch pots until it’s time to put them outside so we can keep using these trays. We have about 70-80 different varieties of things being grown this year 😱

We love all the different colors we get from our ladies! Every time we think about simplifying the flock and just having one or two breeds, we look at our collection of eggs and just can’t.

How do eggs acquire their distinct colors from various chicken breeds? 🥚🌈 One fun aspect is that different breeds of chickens produce eggs with unique colors. This is due to the presence of pigments in the chicken’s diet, which are then deposited on the eggshell during its formation.

For example, the Ameraucana breed is known for producing blue eggs, while the Marans breed produces eggs with deep brown shells. The Araucana breed can even produce eggs with a striking greenish hue. These variations in color are a result of the specific pigments present in the chicken’s body and the way they interact with the eggshell.

The pigmentation process starts in the chicken’s oviduct, where the egg is formed. The oviduct contains specialized cells that release different pigments onto the eggshell as it passes through. These pigments can include protoporphyrin, biliverdin, and oocyanin, among others. Each pigment contributes to the final color of the eggshell, creating a beautiful palette of colors.

Interestingly, the color of an egg can also vary within the same breed of chicken. Factors such as age, diet, and overall health of the chicken can influence the intensity and shade of the eggshell color. This adds another layer of complexity to the pigmentation process and showcases the unique nature of each chicken breed.

By exploring the pigments present in the chicken’s body and their interaction with the eggshell, we can appreciate the remarkable diversity of colors in the world of eggs.

I’ll be trying this out in our garden this year when we get our seedlings in the ground. Have you done anything like this before? What other tricks do you use?

Protect your young plants from cutworms with cardboard collars. These barriers prevent cutworms from reaching the delicate stems and causing damage. This simple and effective solution ensures healthy growth. Create cardboard collars by cutting strips of cardboard and wrapping them around the seedlings’ stems. Press the collars into the soil firmly, extending them above the surface for adequate protection. Ideal for vulnerable seedlings like tomatoes, peppers, and cabbage. Cardboard collars not only safeguard seedlings from cutworms but also act as barriers against slugs and snails.

The cardboard material retains moisture, keeping the soil around the seedlings moist for longer periods. An eco-friendly and cost-effective pest control method.

Orders up! Soft serve duck eggs anyone?

The fascinating process of how duck eggs are formed involves a specialized reproductive system in female ducks. Once a hen reaches s*xual maturity, her body starts producing eggs. The process begins with the development of the yolk inside the hen’s o***y. The yolk then travels through the reproductive tract, where it is surrounded by layers of albumen. The yolk is captured in the infundibulum, and the albumen is added in the magnum. Shell membranes are added in the isthmus, and the hard calcium carbonate shell is formed in the uterus. The fully formed egg is then laid in a nest and incubated by the hen until it hatches.

Understanding this process showcases the remarkable reproductive abilities of ducks and the efficiency of nature.

Don't think I forgot about the ! They just started moving to the front of their nest boxes when it's warm in the afternoons. I think I have 7-10 in one and 5-8 in the other. It's hard to say now without too much handling, so I'm just waiting for them to get a little bigger before messing about too much. Both mamas are doing a great job so far!

So we had a chick run off by accidental moms the other day, so we had to get it some friends. Meet "Berry" and the gang. We bough 2 starlight green eggers and 2 Polish (I hope, the woman at TSC said she wasn't sure they got the right birds in). I attempted to wing s*x them, so hoping the new ones are all girls 🤞

The pups are about this big now. Liza (our tripod), is around 50 pounds, we think. The pups have outgrown their mother figure, so we're guessing they're around 50-60 pounds at the 7 month mark.

It has not been easy getting them trained to leave the birds alone and to stick around the house, but we're getting there. Had to get e-collars (the beep is enough to get their puppy attention), and now they have stopped seeing the birds as an entertainment piece and are becoming polite members of society. They even caught their first possum a couple weeks ago that was trying to get into the chickens (he'd already done some damage a few nights before). Excited to watch them continue to grow and keep the flock safe.

What's more fun than getting puppies when you're 7 months pregnant? We finally caved after multiple mornings of foxes running up the hill trying sn**ch birds and went to pick out a puppy. One puppy, preferably a male. Well, we ended up bringing home 2. For those of you with experience, this is a BAD idea. But here we are, with 2 puppies. Meet Zoe and Elmo. Zoe is the fluffy one, Elmo is our course haired. They are 3/4 pyrenees, 1/4 anatolian, 100% handful. This was from September when they came home with us. Any guesses on how big they are now?
