Speaking of whiskey, the Texas Quote of the Day finds the citizens of Denison verbally attacking the residents of Sherman back in the 1880s. I hope the citizens of Sherman didn't let such taunting go unanswered! 😀

They called the town "Katy’s Baby" in the beginning as the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad established Denison as a rail head just south of the Red River in the winter of 1872. Within days, 3,000 people established Denison as their home. Steam engines came and went. Diesel engines pulled mountains of cargo to and from the rail yards of Denison. It was a railroad town.

Traces of Texas reader Shawn Self graciously shared this wonderful shot of the construction of the Denison Dam in 1940. The dam took four years to build and was completed in 1943, so it's 81 years old. If you've ever been to Lake Texoma, you've these hard-working men to thank.

Thank you, Shawn, for sharing this with us. So random ---- I love it!

16 July 1931 – Texas, Oklahoma battle over bridge across the Red River

On this day in 1931, Texas and Oklahoma locked horns over a newly completed free bridge, built jointly by the two states, across the Red River between Denison, Texas, and Durant, Oklahoma. A firm operating a nearby toll bridge had obtained an injunction preventing the Texas Highway Commission from opening the new bridge because the commission had failed to fulfill its contractual obligation to buy the toll bridge. Texas Governor Ross S. Sterling ordered barricades erected across the Texas approaches to the new bridge. On July 16, however, Oklahoma Governor William (Alfalfa Bill) Murray opened the bridge by executive order.

The following days brought a bewildering array of moves and countermoves involving the Texas Rangers, Oklahoma guardsmen, and Murray's declaration of martial law on both sides of the river and personal appearance in the "war zone" armed with an antique revolver. Finally, on August 6, 1931, the Texas injunction was permanently dissolved, the Oklahoma guardsmen were withdrawn to enforce martial law in the Oklahoma oilfields, and the bridge controversy was laid to rest. The bridge was dynamited in 1995 to make room for a new one. – Texas State Historical Association

Felt like organizing today, so I organized a chart of native trees of the Red River Valley of the South. Note that I'm not an expert but a) I like trees and b) I like organizing.
