Security has been beefed up significantly at the South Mississippi Fair following Saturday night’s shooting. Metal detectors have be installed at the fairgrounds’ entrance with fair officials say extra security will be on patrol throughout the grounds for the remaining days of the fair – which runs through Saturday. Meanwhile, Akealeis McKensie and Jailen Shade – both 18 and both of Laurel – have their initial court appearance today. The pair were charged with aggravated assault. One teenage male was shot – identified as Darren Duff, a student at Northeast Jones High School. He reportedly is recovering from his wound.

The Jones County Sheriff’s Department has two suspects in custody after a shooting incident at the South Mississippi Fair on Saturday night, October 19, 2024.

Akealeis McKensie, age 18, and Jailen Shade, age 18, are both charged with Aggravated Assault in the incident which left a male teenager wounded. The shooting victim is currently receiving treatment at an area hospital and is reported to be in stable condition.

Jones County Sheriff Joe Berlin notes, “Both suspects were apprehended by officers with PROtec Security within a few minutes of the shooting following a foot chase. Both suspects were then taken into custody by JCSD deputies and are currently incarcerated at the Jones County Adult Detention Facility pending their initial appearance in Jones County Justice Court.”

Sheriff Berlin concludes, “There was a vigorous and large law enforcement and emergency medical response to this incident. There will be many stories that come out of this incident regarding the heroism and kindness of emergency responders and civilians alike who stepped up to help fairgoers who were fleeing the scene of the shooting. We greatly appreciate the assistance of every agency and individual who responded to help last night.”

The Jones County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a shooting at the South Mississippi Fair Saturday night that left one fairgoer wounded and two suspects in custody.

A massive law enforcement and medical response was initiated along with PROtec Security officers working the fair responding immediately and apprehending the two suspects.

The South Mississippi Fair was closed for the evening as a result.

The South Mississippi Fair gets underway tomorrow, October 18th thru 26th bringing Country Nights and Carnival Lights to Laurel. Gates open at 5pm on Friday. Enjoy great music, the best food anywhere; the Magic of Lance Gifford, Emerson Farms Pig Races & Petting Zoo, Cirque Ciber, livestock shows, 4H, quilt, horticulture and art exhibits; and carnival rides. There will be free nightly entertainment on the Midway Stage. Admission to the fair is $5. Parking is free at the South Mississippi Fair. A clear bag policy is in effect. No re-entry will be allowed. Take Exit 93 of 1-59 in Laurel.

The Macedonia Volunteer Fire Department will hold an Open House, in conjunction with the National Night Out Against Crime, hosted by the Forrest County Sheriff’s Office and the Forrest County Fire Service.

The event will take place on Tuesday, October 1, from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM at Macedonia Volunteer Fire Department Station 1, located at 610 Macedonia Rd. This year, they are partnering with the Macedonia Baptist Church to enhance the experience and strengthen the partnership with local area churches.

Families are invited to meet the volunteer firefighters and sheriff's deputies who serve in the community daily! There will be free hot dogs and drinks, games for the kids, and fire safety and prevention resources.

They will then begin receiving items Monday, Sept. 30 thru Friday, Oct. 4, 9am-5pm. Contact numbers for information are: 601-425-4276 or 601-466-8237.

Needed items: Non-perishable food items & snacks, baby food, baby wipes, baby diapers, adult diapers, feminine hygiene products, insect repellent, deodorant, body wash/soap, shampoo, toothbrushes/toothpaste, all forms of cleaning supplies/disinfectant, paper towels, and toilet paper/wipes. Please, No Clothes or Furniture. Monetary donations will be accepted with checks made out to Trinity Baptist Church and denote Disaster Relief in the notation area of the check. All funds received will be used to purchase items not supplied.
Trinity Baptist Church is located just off Highway 15 North of Laurel in the Shady Grove Community.

The Sertoma of Laurel Christmas Parade has been moved to the second Friday in December on the 13th at 7pm due to the Mississippi High School football playoff games being played on the first weekend in December. Those games will be played in Hattiesburg, December 5th, 6th and 7th.
