According to the Jones County Sheriff’s Department, the body discovered on Monday, June 10, 2024, at a business on Highway 184 has been positively identified as reported missing person Samantha Elisabeth McCowan.

Following an autopsy completed by the Mississippi Forensic Laboratory, no indications of foul play were noted.

Jones County Sheriff’s Department investigators obtained security camera video from the area during their investigation which also indicated no foul play.

The Jones County Sheriff’s Department appreciates all of the emergency services agencies who assisted during this investigation.

A body found in the trunk of a car may solve one Jones County mystery – but also poses more questions. Authorities say late yesterday morning the body was discovered at a used car dealership on Highway 184 near the intersection of Victory Road. This find was in the same area where a 32-year-old woman went missing early Friday morning after she had wrecked her car. While no positive identification of the remains has been announced, Jones County Sheriff Joe Berlin speculates that the body may be Samantha McCowan. Local authorities have requested the assistance of the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation Crime Scene Unit, which indicates lawmen believe foul play was involved.

The Jones County Sheriff's Department is investigating the discovery of a body in the 1600 block of Highway 184 in the Powers community.

The JCSD has requested the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation Crime Scene Unit to assist, with the scene currently being held as a crime scene pending the outcome of the investigation.

No other information was released by the JCSD at this time.

The Jones County Sheriff’s Department is seeking the whereabouts of missing person Samantha Elisabeth McCowan, age 32,

McCowan was involved in a motor vehicle crash at approximately 1:00am Friday on Victory Road near Hwy. 184. After striking a Mississippi Power Company power pole with her vehicle, McCowan was observed leaving the scene on foot. She was last seen in the vicinity of Highway 184 and Highway 84 East (on the Laurel end) in the early hours Friday.

McCowan is described as a White female, approximately 5’ 6” in height, weighing approximately 160 lbs., and with light brown colored hair. Additionally, McCowan has a tattoo on her right leg from her hip to her knee, a tattoo of dragon on her left hip, and a tattoo on the back of her neck.

McCowan was last seen wearing a lime green shirt, black and white shorts, and a hoodie of unknown color which was seen on a security camera video near the crash site.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Samantha Elisabeth McCowan is asked to call the Jones County Sheriff’s Department at 601-425-3147 or Jones County Crime Stoppers at 601-428-STOP (7867).

The Law Enforcement 2024 Torch Run for Special Olympics will be held today, Thursday, May 9th. Line Up will be at 1:00 PM and the Run begins at 1:30 PM at Ellisville State School, 1101 Highway 11 South, Ellisville.
Runners and visitors should stop at the Ellisville State School front gate for directions and parking instructions.
Come support this event by lining up outside at the designated area on the main street at Ellisville State School to cheer the runners carrying the flame of hope.

UPDATE: Zoe Ashcraft has returned home this morning.

The Jones County Sheriff’s Department is seeking the whereabouts of a missing Jones County teenager.

Zoe Ashcraft, age 15, has been reported missing. She is described as a White female, approximately 5’ 6” in height, estimated to weigh approximately 120 lbs., and with blonde hair. She was not at Northeast Jones Middle School where she is enrolled either yesterday or today. There is no clothing description available.

Zoe Ashcraft has been listed on the FBI’s National Crime Information Center as a missing juvenile.
