Shout out to Fall 2025 STEM Trailblazer feature Brandon Okpalobi is a dynamic Nigerian-American leader in STEM education, innovation, and youth empowerment. Based in Miami, he designs scalable STEM ecosystems that guide students from early exposure to long-term career readiness—bridging classrooms, communities, and high-growth industries. Originally from New Orleans and a former athlete, Brandon founded Dibia Athletic in 2011 to help youth build confidence, academic skills, and leadership through the fusion of sports and problem-solving. The program has supported student-athletes in Bermuda, Miami, and New Orleans, opening doors to scholarships and future opportunities. To expand STEM access, he launched Dibia DREAM in 2014—now a global force in STEM equity. Serving more than 45,000 children across 32 states and 12 countries, DREAM offers immersive, hands-on learning that fuels innovation, builds technical skills, and removes systemic barriers for historically underserved communities. Recognizing the need for learning continuity at home, Brandon created Siyanse , providing expertly designed STEM kits and curriculum that empower families to nurture scientific thinking from toddlerhood through adolescence.

As host of Hands-On STEM on Discovery Education, he extended this work to more than 600,000 youth, inspiring students to see themselves as scientists, engineers, and creators shaping the future. She is a shining example of what it means to lead with purpose, passion, and perseverance in the world of STEM. She earned her degree in Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Science from The University of Alabama, where her academic excellence and curiosity for innovation set her apart. During her collegiate years, Ashley gained invaluable experience interning with NASA as a Technology Transfer and Commercialization Analyst and with Deloitte LLP as an Information Technology Intern. Her achievements as a NASA Space Grant Consortium Scholar and LSAMP Award recipient further highlight her commitment to excellence in STEM. After graduation, Ashley launched a successful career in the aerospace and defense industry, completing her company’s Engineering Leadership Development Program — an exclusive program to enhance her technical expertise and leadership ability. Over the years, she has held key roles in production operations, materials and process engineering, and project engineering. While advancing in her career, she earned her Master’s in Engineering Management from Vanderbilt University, strengthening her foundation as a leader in technology and business. Jerald Henry Smith is the owner, operator, and founder of two businesses, S.T.E.A.M Education Company & Nice Cream Company. He combines science, technology, engineering and the culinary arts to create an unforgettable learning experience and product. Born and raised in Lexington, Kentucky, Jerald always knew that he would become a scientist. He found a passion for Chemistry as a youth from a science kit he purchased at a thrift store. Jerald holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from the University of Louisville. As a Chemist, his research focuses on clean water, renewable energy, and environmental sustainability. As an educator, Jerald has helped to develop and facilitate science curricula that meets next generation science standards for pre-kindergarten through undergraduate college-level students. Jerald was a member of Bridge Kids Louisville and is a long-time staff member of Bridge Kids International. Jerald owns and manages Nice Cream at Our Place at Ben Washer Park, leads STEAM programs, directs the 7 Generations African Heritage Culture Camp, and assists in We Made It and a variety of BKI programs.
