Sadly. Football legend Ara Parseghian, a Navy WWII Veteran, passed away today. Mr. Parseghian was kind enough to agree to be interviewed for my Great Lakes football book several years ago. Interestingly enough, he served as a boot camp Company Commander at Great Lakes from 1943 to 1945. I asked him, "You've written and been the subject of several books. Has anyone ever asked you about your military service before?" He responded "No, first time. They'd usually ask 'Were you in the service during World War Ii?' 'Yeah. I was in the Navy'--and that was it." He recalled being a Commander Commander was "kind of like being a coach." Truely a classy gentleman.

Ara Parseghian, a member of the College Football Hall of Fame who coached Notre Dame and Northwestern, died at 94.

One year ago today, we lost Mr. George Spencer--a reserve football quarterback for the Great Lakes Bluejackets in 1944 and, later, a baseball pitcher for the NY Giants ('shot heard around the world' fame). It was my great pleasure to interview him several times in the making of "By Air Ground & Sea" in 2013.

If you haven't already, you may want to follow this inspiring story of a wounded Navy Veteran and his quest to play in the Major Leagues. David Jacobs has tried out for the Dodgers (Mar. 1st), the Tigers (Mar. 9th), and has an upcoming tryout with the White Sox. Reminds me of the great Bert Shepard, the amputee Army pilot who played for the Washington Senators in '45.

One leg and all, Daniel Jacobs will try out with the Detroit Tigers on March 9.
