The made their debut in the pages of the May 6, 1968 issue of Austin-based Underground newspaper, “The Rag”.

Gilbert created the trio of characters after watching a Marx Brothers/Three Stooges double feature one night in Austin. At the bottom of the story it reads, “Watch for the Fabulous Freak Brothers movie: ‘The Freak Brothers March on the Capitol’ coming soon to the Vulcan Gas Company”. The film featured a few of Gilbert’s friends and has since been lost.
