2023 brought us two video campaigns for Founders First Capital Partners. We wrapped the year with a shoot at Larimore Production Co. and SAE Kitchen in Vista. I highly recommended these locations.

On the crew front, I took on the roles of director and DP, with the ever-impressive Kelli Lessie as the powerhouse producer. Rafael Rodriguez helmed the Spanish scripts, Gerard Black lit up the scenes as the Gaffer, and Tony Englado contributed as the 2nd camera and AC for select shots. Carie Webb brightened up the set and added her touch to makeup and hair. Our PA team featured Larry Lessie and Siena Yocum, with Siena also taking on the role of a featured extra.
In the English cast, we had the talented Darian Garey and Casey Waller, while the Spanish cast featured the Columbian songsmith Luis Bernal and Karla Casos. Casey and Karla expertly navigated a massive amount of teleprompter copy, making my job a breeze. Anthony DeLa Cruz added a fun touch to both the English and Spanish scripts.

Apologies for my social media absence in 2023! Let's catch up on some fantastic projects. One highlight includes a couple of video campaigns for Founders First Capital Partners.
The initial shoot was at The Film Hub in Vista, where I wore the hats of director and DP. Kudos to the fantastic producer Kelli Lessie, the skilled gaffer David Lichtenberg, and Matthew Fitzpatrick as 2nd camera/1st AC. Big shoutout to Rafael Rodriguez as the Spanish director, Seancarlo Ohlin as PA/prompter op, and the incredible Carie Webb handling makeup/hair.
Our cast was a true blessing, featuring the legendary San Diego actor Merrick McCartha, along with the talented Andrea McClew, Jordan Jacobo, Enrique Morlett, Lizet Benrey, Sandi Eberhardt, and Joseph Stephens.

Another fun gig of 2023 was shooting and editing the concept trailer for "More Than a Game," a personal project by Kelli Lessie. Inspired by true events, Kelli crafted the story, and Kevin Waczek penned the script.

Thanks to Jon Hickey, we secured a fantastic connection with USD. Kelli, wearing both director and producer hats, did a stellar job, with her husband Larry providing unwavering support. I took on the roles of cinematographer and editor, Gerard Black lit up the scenes as the gaffer, with assistance from Ethan Black. Tony Engaldo served as the first AC, and Matias Vizquerra contributed as a boom op and also showcased his drone skills. Kevin Waczek lent a hand with the second camera, and it added to the fun having my wife, Ann Leslie , jump in, don the uniform, and join as an extra!

Our cast featured talented young actors portraying softball players, including Izzy Owen and Haley Jones. Laura Holzinger took on the role of the grandmother, Christopher Childs portrayed the stern coach, David Lincoln played the athletic director, and Kimberly Ransom stepped into the opposing team's coach role. Lastly, Rolando Gonzalez and Kevin Waczek assumed the positions of field announcers.

New toy with serious fire power! Aputure's 600d Pro. The Light Dome softbox, Fresnel attachment and bar doors are on back order but will hopefully be coming soon.

I had a simple little beauty shoot yesterday. Gerard Black made a nice soft book light for us. We were stuck with leaving the house lights on, but we made the best of it. Hight key soft lighting.

Here is the second commercial that I directed and edited for GDEFY. This one is totally different vibe from the first commercial. Most of this spot was shot at the standing sets studio, Silver Dream Factory.

Both commercials will start running nationally this week.

Producer/director Jeff Deverett had me pull some frame grabs from a feature that I shot and edited for him two plus years ago. It was fun to revisit the project.

This one was shot completely in San Diego with the help of gaffer, Cody Caldwell, 2nd camera, Gerard Black, sound by Beto Cabral and many other great crew members.

Filmmaking is a group sport. We couldn't have done it without all the crews help and input!

FULL OUT 2, a feature film that I had the pleasure of being both the cinematographer and editor, is now on Netflix!

It was shot almost entirely at the University of Oklahoma, with all all Oklahoma crew except for the director, Jeff Deverett, the AD, Kevin Waczek… and myself.

It’s a fun family film about a gymnastics team that raises above the competition with the help of a local break dancer. Loosely based on the true story of the 2016 OU gymnastics team.

Here's a vlog I created for CineD (formerly Cinema 5D) reviewing the Zhiyun Crane 3S Pro. For the price, it's a pretty impressive gimbal and it's rated for up to 14.3 lbs. load, which is great. I flew my Varicam LT stripped down to 12 lbs and it performed well but it was HEAVY!

When I heard the Zhiyun CRANE 3S / 3S Pro were rated for cams up to 14.3 lbs (6.5 kg), I wanted to see if they could live up to their specs.

After 3 months of hard work, we’ve finished the shoot and initial edit of Jeff Deverett’s feature film! It was a great project with a fantastic cast and crew. We’re submitting it to Sundance today. Fingers crossed!

Alpha Wolf, a film that I was the cinematographer on last summer, just got it's release date! It was a really fun, albeit challenging, shoot with a great cast and crew. Can't wait to see the final results of the Wes Caefer script that was directed and produced by Kevin VanHook!
