How's everyone doing? Staying dancey?
Lately I've been playing with the DJ controller like an instrument and just experimenting with looping, sampling, filters, and effects! It's pretty fun. Sometimes it sounds really cool, sometimes not so much...but I always learn something new.

Here's a breakdown of how I made my latest downtempo track and modified Brandon's guitar sample! If you've ever used Garageband, you'll recognize the layout of Logic X Pro; Garageband is like Logic's younger sibling, which I think makes it a lot less intimidating than other programs.

My latest mini mix! I like this one - it's chill, melodic, hypnotic, and I think pretty relaxing. It goes a little outside the bounds of my usual choices in terms of genre, and it was really fluid to put together. The second track is a dnb tune that a young producer acquaintance of mine remixed when we were teens and it's so cool to be able to share it in this way. I like this track because of the blending of multiple genres - rap, dancehall, hip, hop, and trap. The rap flow is solid and her singing voice provides a bright contrast. The producer also plays with half and double time throughout the track, keeping the listener interested and inspiring your body to move in different ways. This husband and wife duo is from Austin and they host Body Rock ATX!

THE CAR TEST. 😱
My music has been FAILING the car test since 2001.**
And for the first time ever I'd say it passed! This is a momentous occasion and I must celebrate. I'm thinking an affogato*...maybe I'll wear a onesie in public and go buy new strange colors of lipstick. Wooo!
*If you like coffee ice cream, get you an affogato. It's vanilla gelato with espresso poured over!
**The car test is a reference to the process of spending a million hours of producing and engineering a track and then when you go to listen to it in your car, it sounds like absolute garbage. That's because music sounds a bit different depending on the speakers reproducing the sound, and the "room" it's in. Because a lot of people listen to most of their music in cars, it's important that it sounds good in that environment! (You want it to sound good in ALL environments)

I like this track because of the beautiful musical hook "how, how did this happen?" echoing throughout. It's very simple, only his voice and guitar for the most part. I also enjoy the uneven phrasing of the first part of the song and the meandering song structure.

"19:00" by Danger and Tasha The Amazon (Canada)
I like this track because it goes hard. Tasha's confidence comes through and Danger, who produced the song, compliments her bravado equally. The verse is rhythmically straight and the chorus swings, which gives it a special swagger that makes the straight 4/4 all that more satisfying.

"Stardew" by Purity Ring (USA)
I like this song because of the way it sneaks up on you - at first it's just a groovy little synthpop song and the next second you're tearing up. Megan's lyrics are stunning. The opening and closing tinkly harmonies are absolutely too beautiful. I feel this track is greatly enhanced by the tender discomfort of the music video.
"I know it seems far but just be where you are."

I like this mysterious track because it has an unusual sound. Her voice is floaty yet you can hear her mouth forming every syllable as if she were far away and very close at the same time. The drums come in when you don't expect them to, which is uncommon in pop music. Also pay attention to the interesting use of delay (echo) on her voice, the drums, and synths. "here it comes"

"Delirious - Kimyan Law Remix" by BCee (UK) and Kimyan Law (Australia)
I like this track because of the way Kimyan uses the vocal samples as percussive elements, the heavily syncopated dnb/jungle-inspired half time groove, and the part right after the chill breakdown. To top it all off, the atmosphere he creates is beautiful and melodic.

I like this track because of the thick, trudging groove at 70 bpm, the deep bass, and the bubbly synth that sounds organic and alive (a signature sound in all of her music). I also like the way she pitches the vocals down and creates new melodies with them. Pay attention to the use of violins, an instrument not typically heard in this genre.
