"Read this book and read it slowly. Read each poem at least twice. Contemplate the diction, the imagery, the space, the themes. 'The Walls We Build' is understated yet explosive, accessible yet deep, subtle yet profound, fresh yet timeless."

"Every word, line, and stanza is intentionally written the way it is to portray what could be a novel's length in substance."

"The author has painstakingly illustrated the duality of these moments by bringing to life the beauty that coexists with grief and despair."

Just a few of the rave reviews for "The Walls We Build: a collection of poetry and prose by kirsten hege."

This book is a direct view into my mind at my lowest moments. Make sure to buy, read, and review your copy to prepare for the release of TWWB's sister collection, "They Ways We Fortify." I cannot wait to share my healing journey with you, release date coming soon!

In The Walls We Build, I poured my heart out, emptying what has essentially been my diary for the better part of the last four years. I picked through my desperate pleas to the world and combined them into a collection to show the ebbs and flows of life with mental illness.⁣

I read the final piece and expected there to be an equal pairing of happiness and despair, a tit for tat of the bad and good days I’d written about. I was wrong. It was mostly filled with work that screams of despair; even the poems about happy moments ended with fear of losing them.⁣

I looked at my book and I felt the balance was off, I was sharing life with mental illness as this miserable existence just waiting for the days to end. ⁣

That’s not what life is, that's not what my life is. There is so much more light than dark, so much more growth than sorrow. ⁣

I feel a need to show that, that there is plenty of darkness in our world, that if I’m to put any of that out there, I have an obligation to pour just as much, if not more, light. ⁣

That’s what The Ways We Fortify is. It is the light. It is the healing. It is the hope. It is the first rain of Spring and the sun beams through endless clouds. It’s the one warm day in February and the freckle beside your nose. It’s real life, the balance of good and bad. ⁣

The Ways We Fortify. 7/4/22. Preorder the kindle eBook on Amazon now; link in bio. Keep your eyes peeled for some pretty huge announcements coming soon along with some sneak peeks into the next collection in The Walls We Build series.⁣

writing is such an out of body experience for me.

there’s no marked point of focus or inspiration but more just a collecting of twenty-six letters that capture something coming from inside and all around.

today i ran out of ADHD meds and wrote this with a face mask on and glasses off, just a completely unfiltered stream of consciousness.

i love this because it’s all of me. adhd, anxiety, depression, chaos, pain, healing, mindfulness, intention, drive, hope; they’re all wrapped into one. this is a piece for my next book, “The Ways We Fortify,” available for ebook preorder right now (link in bio), coming July 4th, 2022.

there’s light for every moment of darkness, even when you have to force yourself to find it. consider enlisting the help of some blueberries and camomile, they work wonders on your mind and body.

i hope everyone has the chance to have a chaotic and reflective sunday 🌫🌱

World Poetry Day

A day that warrants a double-post.

"Chrysalism.

n. the amniotic tranquility of being indoors during a thunderstorm, listening to waves of rain pattering against the roof like an argument upstairs, whose muffled words are unintelligible but whose crackling release of built-up tension you understand perfectly."

March, and all of Pisces season (all. the. emotions.) for that matter, has been a period of self-motha-f*ckin-care, y'all.

It's been a season of emotional overwhelm, unrest, turmoil, change, and exhaustion- all a challenge I consider welcome (after the fact, that is). I've been distant, allowing myself a break from the content creation obligations and such, focusing on school, my relationships, and myself. It's been beautiful, but I'm ready to Spring into Aries season and dive headfirst into what I love.

The first is myself. That means writing, yoga, being outdoors, eating food that feels good for me, singing (albeit terribly), focusing on breath, painting, coloring, spending time with my plants, seeing the people I love, getting plenty of rest, drinking tons of water, and so on.

Any other water signs out here struggling through Pisces season? or anyone else for that matter? What do you do to show yourself, your goals, and your environment love? What does springtime look like for you?
