A few songs are recurring for me. This is one of them. It was written in the 1960s by Dottie Rambo. This rendition by 11th Hour, a southern gospel trio, is one of the best versions.

I didn't come here to ask You for anything
I just came to talk with you Lord
You've answered a million prayers or more
That I forgot to thank You for
I just came to talk with You Lord
Maybe tomorrow there'll be trouble and sorrow
And a thousand teardrops may fall
But until I face tomorrow's task
I have no special favor to ask
I just came to talk with you Lord
How many times Lord
Have troubles brought me down to my knees
But I just came to talk with you Lord
I have no selfish motive in mind
Just want to thank you for all the other times
I just came to talk with you Lord
Maybe tomorrow there'll be trouble and sorrow
And a thousand teardrops may fall
But until I face tomorrow's task
I have no special favor to ask
I just came to talk with you Lord
I just came to talk with you Lord

On September 15, 1983, thirty-nine years ago tomorrow, The Guardian of Truth Magazine published an article by Mike Willis entitled, THE SIMPLICITY OF THE GOSPEL.

His conclusion includes these words...

"Brethren, let us be careful not to lose sight of the simplicity of the gospel of Christ. I am afraid that some of us have become so enamored with education and so concerned with impressing others with how much we know that we have left the impression that the gospel of Christ is complicated. Some brethren who have studied the Scriptures have reached some peculiar position on some subject which is so complicated and full of intricate details that the common man cannot possibly understand it. Most college educated preachers who have given a life-time to the study of the Scriptures have trouble following the course of argumentation being used. Brethren, if the common man must know this in order to be saved, the common man has no hope of being saved. If the common man can be saved without knowing and believing it, these peculiar ideas are not the gospel because one cannot be saved without believing the gospel (Mk. 16:16)."

The purpose of preaching isn't to prove or show off our scholarship, but to share the good news of the gospel - that Jesus Christ died so we can be forgiven of our sins and be redeemed eternally.

The Bible is addressed to every man. When Jesus sent out the apostles on the Great Commission, they were sent to take the gospel to every creature (Mk. 16:15) of every nation of the whole world (Matt. 28:18). The invitation was extended to every man. "And whosoever will, let him take the water of li...

So are we in favor of killing unborn babies, or are we opposed to states' rights...or are we afraid our state elected officials will represent us or do we fear they'll fail to represent us? And do we want to outlaw gun ownership kinda/sorta because people use them to kill people but we want federal government approval for killing unborn people?

I'm so confused. But it stands to reason I'd be confused because God created us male and female. Culture says, "There are many variations of gender." If I'm unable to figure out something as basic as gender - stands to reason I'm ill-equipped with sufficient brain power to understand all the pro-abortion rally cries.

Common sense takes a hit and hypocrisy adds a win. Again.

The government is not going to save any of us. Ever. Because they don't have God's power. Eternity changes everything.

I often hear public prayers asking God to help us leave our problems outside of worship as though a) that's even possible and b) that God actually wants us to do that. Repeatedly, the scriptures admonish us to lean on the Lord and by extension, God the Father. To avoid being anxious, instead casting our burdens on Him because He cares for us. Is avoiding or suppressing our problems what God wants? Does God expect us to enter worship without our worries, or does He expect to bring them into worship knowing He cares deeply about us?

If He is our God in trouble - and He is - then I wonder why we insist on not laying our burdens on Him so He can help us better bear up under the strain. And so we can more deeply worship Him?

Matthew 26:47-50 "And while he yet spake, lo, Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priests and elders of the people. Now he that betrayed him gave them a sign, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that is he: take him. And straightway he came to Jesus, and said, Hail, Rabbi; and kissed him. And Jesus said unto him, Friend, do that for which thou art come. Then they came and laid hands on Jesus, and took him."

Up in verse 24 of that same chapter in Matthew, 26, the Bible declares, "The Son of man goeth, even as it is written of him: but woe unto that man through whom the Son of man is betrayed! good were it for that man if he had not been born."

WHAT IF OUR CONGREGATIONS WERE MORE ACTIVELY SEEKING PERFECTION?

Lord willing, I'll be releasing a sermon series about building a highly-functioning congregational culture where every member leverages their God-given talents to serve God by serving others. Such a culture where members are concerned for the welfare of one another as they jointly concern themselves with serving God faithfully.

What if our congregations were the safest places on earth where we could encourage each other, help lovingly correct one another, lift one another up, confess our sins and struggles to one another without fear of ridicule or judgment?

What if our congregations were more perfectly what the Lord wanted them to be - places where Christians were built up and strengthened to succeed in making the trip to Heaven?

What if our congregations were characterized by every member's ability (and opportunity) to leverage their own unique talents to serve?

What if we could avoid (and remedy) envy, jealousy, pride and the quest for power or authority?

What if every member of our congregations understood how and where they fit in the work?

What if our congregations were truly "autonomous," accountable only to the Lord?

What if our congregations were able to discuss and study - searching the scriptures - to grow our individual and collective understanding of the Scriptures?

What if we were able to elevate our curiosity about God's Word in order to gain deeper understanding?

What if our congregations fostered questions, from young and old, so every generation could be converted, learning for themselves the Truth of God's Word?

What if we showed the world that we're children of God by the love we have for one another?

Isn't it time we moved from "what if" to "now what?" As in, "Now what might we be able to accomplish for the Lord and for one another?"

Memories are a blessing or a curse.

God's Word urges us to "remember the Creator in the days of your youth." And to remember the Lord until He comes again when we commune each Lord's Day. And warns us that God will remember our iniquities (our sins, those things we do contrary to what God wants) unless we repent (turn from our sins and faithfully obey God).

There's the story of the unthankful lepers who seemed to quickly forget what the Lord had done for them. Scripture is filled with stories and admonitions of remembering. And warnings, too.

What will God and other humans remember about you?

What does God think of you right now? What do others think?

Lots of people declare, "I don't care what God thinks. Or what anybody else thinks."

Do you care about what YOU think though?

Is there any guilt or shame that you're tired of living with?

God provides THE only remedy for that - and every human being needs it. Salvation from our sins, but also salvation from our guilt and shame.

King David, confronted by God's prophet Nathan, faced his sins of adultery, murder and lying. He repented and was forgiven by God, which resulted in his ability to rid himself of guilt and shame.

He wrote in Psalm 32:5 "I acknowledged my sin unto thee, And mine iniquity did I not hide: I said, I will confess my transgressions unto Jehovah; And thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin."

David acknowledged that God forgot his sin after he confessed it and repented of it. God didn't remember it against him. He's God. He has that kind of love, forgiveness and ability. David rejoiced because when God took away David's sin He also took away David's guilt. God will do that for you today, too!

Do you need God's forgiveness? Don't you want God to know you at Judgment and claim you as one of His own? Don't you want your friends and family to remember you for being a faithful servant of God?
