Master Prep Part 2: Clicks and Pops

Mastering makes things louder. There are sounds that ‘show up’ a lot more after mastering than may have been apparent in your mix. Noise is cumulative so get rid of as much unneeded noise as possible.

This includes blank spaces in instrument tracks where that sound isn’t playing. The biggest culprit is almost always vocal tracks.

Small lip pops. Swallowing. Breaths. As I said these may seem insignificant and possibly not be heard in your mix but when you add compression and limiting in mastering suddenly that breath by the singer is super loud. That time she licked her lips just before a note is a huge pop.

Clean up your tracks of all unnecessary sound for a better final version 😎😎

Mix Prep Series all week! Do’s and don’ts in getting ready for mastering

Part One: leave the volume to the experts

TOO LOUD!!
Ok so here’s the thing. Mastering is not mixing. Mixing is not mastering. I get files that are louder than I would have mastered them. Don’t do this!

Why does this happen? Well our ears trick us. Loud sounds better. It just does. Also when mixing artists want the mixes to sound like their favorite songs so they push the volume to compete.

Why this is incorrect: mastering gives you the volume you need. That’s part of my job. However if you send a file that’s already too loud I don’t have any room to adjust correctly. Without squashing or pumping your album.

Mix with your effects. That’s fine. Get an idea of what you want it to sound like. When sending files to be mastered remove all mix buss processing. I can’t remove too much compression or volume and your master will not be as clear or punchy as you desire.

I’ve been mixing for about 20 years and wow did I make a lot of mistakes before I went to mastering in the past. Like. A LOT

Here’s some tips to help you out

In the Mix:

Check your edits and fades —- you don’t want any clicks or pops showing up

Crossfade your edits!!

Don’t squash your Mix Buss! Mastering will give you all the level you need. No need to try to get it in the mix. Leaving headroom makes for a better master!

Leave a little room at the front and back of your song.

Don’t overdo EQ!!! —- one of the biggest things I learned when I became a mastering engineer was how to tune my room. Our spaces fool us and we make whacky decisions. Less is usually more!

Most important: get it right at the source!!! Recording properly will eliminate sooo many issues.
Lose the mindset of “fixing it in the mix”
