Happy Earth Day 🌎 🌿 ❤️
We celebrated by cleaning up a one mile stretch of road in the West Augustine community.
The event was hosted by the West Augustine Nature Society and the West Augustine Improvement Association in partnership with Nu Epsilon Sigma Chapter Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc.
So many amazing volunteers came out to clean the streets, and the dedication was inspiring. We are so thankful to everyone who came out to help.
Heather won the coolest piece of trash contest hosted by the Wilsons for literally fishing out a tricycle from a very murky piece of wetland.
Some of the volunteers won some fantastic prizes from Southern Horticulture Juicy St. Augustine Sol Margin Fishing & Conservation Foundation and Dancing Treetops.
🌳 🪴 🌱 Everyone went home with free plants from @DancingTreetops and @EarthGuyRye.

I want to show you San Sebastian. When I did the first story on the Pinehurst and San Sebastian Cemeteries - two of the oldest African American cemeteries in Florida - a few years ago, I was in awe. These cemeteries are such a symbol of and a witness to St. Augustine's complicated history with race, and it saddens me to see that even after death, segregation and racial injustice are still so blatant.
One of the graves that inspires me to get involved and to help WAIA in their efforts to restore and maintain the cemeteries is the grave of St. Augustine Record columnist Artemesia Holloway Jones.
When I first wrote about her grave, her grave marker was still intact while showing clear signs of imminent decay. Now, two years later, her grave marker has fully crumbled.
The West Augustine Improvement Association is a small, non-profit, volunteer-run organization, and when looking at where we could make the biggest, long-lasting difference - getting granite gravestones on some of these graves with missing or crumbling grave markers seemed the most urgent in addition to raising funds for upkeep of the cemeteries.
Many of those buried at the cemeteries no longer have family in the area.
Each granite gravestone costs $210, and this includes engraving and installation.
☆☆☆
I ask all of you to please help if you can.
💲 Donations of any size help.
❤️ If you can not donate, please share.
Sharing the videos and posts from WAIA's social media or from the GoFundMe page is such an important part in raising funds.
