The Pender High School girls top St. Mary's and are in the state finals for the second straight season! 9 AM | PINNACLE BANK ARENA | No. 1 Pender (27-1) vs. No. 3 Southern Valley (28-1).
IT'S GAME DAY IN PENDER!
The Pender High School girls host Sandy Creek at 6 p.m. tonight for the D1-1 District Final and a chance to play in Lincoln on the line. Doors open at 5 p.m., tipoff at 6 p.m. and the programs are popping off the printer at the Times. Good luck to the host Pendragons and visiting Cougars.
State Bound!
THERE'S ONLY ONE PLACE TO BE ON THURSDAY AFTERNOON
Last one in Pender . . . .
Thank you, Moore family. The mat will honor Jerry’s memory for many years to come.
The Pender High School wrestling team was introduced in a parade of championship teams at the state tournament tonight prior to the semifinals in Omaha. They will be one of eight Class D teams competing in the state dual tournament in Kearney a week from Saturday, qualifying by winning the D-3 district title. Go Pendragons!
Congratulations to Pender Elementary School on being named a National Blue Ribbon School today . . . Some perspective here: Only about 350 out of roughly 140,000 United States schools earn this designation each year, and there were only 18 Nebraska schools since 1982! This video shows the moment that students and staff saw Pender broadcast as earning the designation during a school assembly. Superintendent Jason Dolliver noted it was "exceptional test scores" that qualified the local school district. Closing achievement gaps is another way schools can qualify.
2017 Girls State Basketball Preview
Earlier this week, Pender girls basketball coach Larry Ballinger talked with The Pender Times' Mark Vrbicky about the Lady Pendragons' first state tournament appearance since 2014. Here, he shares some insight as to what needed to happen to make the team's trip to Lincoln a reality, how the girls have been preparing since their sub-district final loss a couple of weeks ago and what's in store for the Dragons when they step on the court against undefeated Dundy County-Stratton in their 2 p.m. showdown on Thursday at Lincoln Southwest High School.
(Apologies in advance for the strange buzzing sound that can be heard in the background. Our recording equipment isn't very fancy.)
Pender Jamboree 2016 Check-In
A quick look at what's going on in downtown Pender right now. There will also be live music and dancing to the band Party of 5 at 9 p.m. as well as fireworks at dusk. Come and join in the fun!
Pendragon Recap (February 2016)
In case you missed it, here's a quick look back at the final month of the winter sports season at Pender High School.
I'll Be Home for Groundhog Day
The Pender Times staff braves a blizzard in an effort to get home from work.
(Note: Because of Mother Nature and all the snow she dropped on the area yesterday, print production of the newspaper has been delayed a day. But since we're troopers and/or insane, we still showed up on Tuesday to try to get The Times put together like we would on a normal week. Since it wasn't decided until late yesterday to push printing back a day, Mark V had already finished his stories for this week's edition and had some extra time on his hands this afternoon. This is what he decided to do with it. It's all in good fun, so enjoy.)
