Antonio Giannini, born in Camaiore, Provincia di Lucca, Toscana, Italy in 1747, migrated to the American colonies during the early 18th century. Alongside his wife, Maria Domenica Modena (1747-1824), Giannini arrived as a young man and worked as an indentured servant under Philip Mazzei. After fulfilling his bound labor contract, he joined Thomas Jefferson's team as a gardener and utilized his expertise in the Italian style of gardening that prioritized symmetry and balance in garden design.
Later on, Giannini purchased land on Buck Island in Albemarle County, Virginia. His descendants can be found across America today, as he and Maria had several children.
