Nine Dead, Including Coach and Six College Golfers, in Texas Wreck

the University of the Southwest’s golf teams were making the kind of drive familiar to athletes at plenty of small colleges — aboard a passenger van around sunset and after a day of competition — on Tuesday night when a pickup rumbled into view.

The truck, the Texas authorities said Wednesday, soon struck the bus on the rural road, a tragedy that left nine people dead, including the university’s golf coach and six of his players. The wreck was among the worst accidents involving sports teams in recent years.

“This will be a huge hurdle that we will all have to overcome, and it will be a very difficult time for many,” Steve Appel, the athletic director at the nondenominational Christian university in Hobbs, N.M., said in a statement. “U.S.W. is a tight-knit family, and I am confident that we will work together to get through this.”

The university did not identify any of the victims by name, but it said its golf coach was among the people who had died in the wreck along a two-lane road near a larger highway in West Texas. A university spokeswoman said the only people aboard the bus were the coach, Tyler James, and students.

The Texas Department of Public Safety, which opened an investigation into the wreck along with the National Transportation Safety Board, said in a statement on Wednesday that the truck had veered into the lane that the team van was traversing “for unknown reasons” just after 8:15 p.m. on Tuesday. State officials said both vehicles erupted into flames, and that the driver and a passenger in the pickup also had died. The authorities did not immediately release their identities.

WWE SWITCHED UP PLANS FOR ROMAN REIGNS ON SMACKDOWN THIS WEEK

Friday Night SmackDown in Chicago, Illinois had a lot of script shuffled at the very last moment. WWE aired the live episode and taped the Christmas Eve edition. Last night’s episode of the blue brand wasn’t without some changes, but that should be expected nowadays.

The original plan was to have The Usos vs. The New Day as the main event. It was later moved up the segment to make way for Roman Reigns promo segment.

According to Fightful Select reports, Roman Reigns was initially set to open the show with an in-ring promo. At the very last moment, it was nudged back as the main event of the night.

Originally Roman Reigns was set to open WWE Smackdown on December 17 with an in-ring promo, which was moved to the main event spot. Usos vs. New Day was slated internally to main event, and was adjusted.

A sit-down interview of Brock Lesnar was originally planned. To everyone’s disappointment, it never made it to air. The Shotzi Blackheart and Charlotte Flair vs. Sasha Banks and Toni Storm was planned for the next week’s show. The event already took place last night instead.

The Storm vs. Flair “Championship Contender’s” match was scheduled to take place this week. It got postponed to the following week. The original plans were listed during the afternoon. Surprisingly, all of these changes were made a few hours before the show.

WWE RAW GOING HEAD-TO-HEAD WITH AEW DYNAMITE IN CANADA

AEW and WWE are in the same industry and that means that some viewers might choose one program over the other. It seems that some Canadian fans will have to make a choice now.

The Wrestling Observer Newsletter included a very interesting programming note for our friends in Canada. Those fans will have a choice on Wednesday nights now. They can either watch AEW Dynamite live or they can also switch over to Sportsnet 360 and take in a re-run of WWE RAW’s show that week.

Sportsnet 360 in Canada, the home of WWE, is now airing a Raw replay on Wednesday nights at 8 p.m. head-to-head with Dynamite on TSN

This is a unique situation and we have to wonder if it was on purpose. Odds are Sportsnet 360 placed RAW’s repeat on Wednesday because it fit with their schedule. That won’t stop the conspiracy theorist fan base from chiming in about the pro wrestling war gong on in Canada.
