Fortnite players and other Epic Games customers tricked by the game maker into making unwanted purchases are set to receive refund payments from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).

As part of a settlement first announced in December 2022, the video game maker has been ordered by the FTC to pay $245 million to resolve allegations that it used unlawful billing practices involving design tricks known as dark patterns to get players to unintentionally rack up charges. It is the largest ever refund amount in a gaming case, the agency said.

The FTC says it is sending more than 629,000 payments Monday, with more disbursements to come at a later date. About half of the first tranche of payments will be made through PayPal, and the other half will be checks. Collectively, customers will receive $72 million in refunds, according to the agency.

Will China eventually dominate the electric flying car market, much as it has done with electric vehicles? That’s the goal, according to a Chinese trade group that predicts the country will have more than 100,000 autonomous drones, flying cars, and electric air taxis hovering over its cities by 2030. It’s all part of the plan to develop what Chinese government officials call the “low-altitude economy.” Beyond its own borders, China also wants to become the dominant provider of electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft in developing countries across Asia and even developed nations like Japan.

The industry has a long path to developing the production facilities and infrastructure needed to hit the 100,000 air vehicle mark, but it’s already making inroads into other Asian countries.

Chinese eVTOL maker AutoFlight last week flew one of its prototypes in Japan for the first time in collaboration with the aerospace nonprofit MASC. The first Japanese test flight of its five-seat Prosperity eVTOL aircraft is part of a longer-term plan to link electric aircraft to outlying coastal areas with aging infrastructure and poor transportation hubs.

The flight, which went off successfully, set the stage for more test flights across different Japanese cities to accelerate adoption of commercial advanced air mobility. Earlier this year, AutoFlight sold a Japanese customer the first Prosperity outside of China, which will be used as a non-piloted demo model in events such as the World Expo in Osaka next year.
In a report released last week, the China Low Altitude Economic Alliance said China could have 100,000 long-range drones and eVTOLs in the air, as cargo transport, personal flying cars, or air taxis by 2030. Besides eVTOLS, large, long-range drones, which could carry cargo at altitudes of about 3,000 feet for distances up to 1,000 miles, are being tested. Drones are expected to comprise the bulk of the air traffic.

Luigi Mangione was eating at the McDonald’s when an employee recognized him, police say.
Police report that Mangione attended college in Pennsylvania. His LinkedIn page indicates he studied at the University of Pennsylvania for both his undergraduate education and his master’s degree, graduating in 2020.
His most recent employment appears to have been in Santa Monica, California, per his Linkedin.

Suspect had ghost gun that can be made on 3D printer, capable of firing 9mm rounds

Mangione, the person of interest, has been arrested on firearm charges, authorities said.
When he was arrested, police said that he was in possession of a ghost gun that may have been made on a 3D printer, that had the capability of firing a nine millimeter round and a suppressor.

The police have not released the details of what was written in the document they obtained on the person of interest, but said that “it does seem that he has some some ill will toward corporate America”.
Joseph Kenny, the chief of detectives for the New York police department, said that “there’s numerous lynchpins in this case” adding that authorities “recovered an enormous amount of forensic evidence”.

A Philadelphia man who received a $4.1million settlement from city officials after he served 24 years behind bars for a murder he did not commit is headed back to jail.

Shaurn Thomas, now 50, pleaded guilty in court on Thursday to killing 38-year-old Akeem Edwards on January 3, 2023 over a $1,200 drug debt, the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.

He had previously been convicted of second-degree murder for the November 1990 shooting death of a Puerto Rican businessman, and was sentenced to life in prison

But Thomas had long maintained his innocence - saying at the time of 78-year-old Domingo Martinez’s death he was incarcerated at a juvenile jail, according to the Innocence Project, which helped get him released in 2017.

Attorneys from the organization discovered detectives knew Thomas had a potential alibi, and even had 36 pages of undisclosed witness statements pointing to other suspects, but zeroed in on Thomas because of statements made by two alleged co-conspirators.

Those co-conspirators’ stories, however, changed over time, and one even wound up recanting his testimony - claiming that cops fed him a false story and assaulted him until he repeated it.

The Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office ultimately declined to retry the case, despite prosecutors saying they were not entirely convinced Thomas was innocent.

Thomas was then released from prison and said at the time he had ‘no animosity’ toward the police, and planned to ‘just move on forward,’ according to ABC News

Three years later, Thomas settled a suit against the city for $4.15million.

He had also joined a network of other Philadelphians who were freed from prison after their convictions overturned.

There, he met Ketra Veasy, whose brother, Willie, had his murder case overturned in 2019.

The two dated on and off for six years, and last fall, Thomas asked her to connect him with her childhood friend, Akeem Edwards, to see if he might sell some co***ne for him, prosecutors had said.

The ex-convict then gave Edwards a sandwich bag filled with drugs and told him to bring back $1,200 from the proceeds, which Edwards never paid by January 3, 2023.👀⛓️💔

TikTok has asked a court for an emergency injunction to prevent it becoming unavilable in the US next month.
The US government passed a law demanding the app’s sale or ban because of what it says are its links to the Chinese state - links TikTok and its parent company ByteDance deny.
The social media company lost its appeal against the law in a decision handed down on Friday - and said afterwards it would appeal to the Supreme Court.
TikTok and ByteDance have now submitted a legal request to temporarily block the law to give the Supreme Court more time to consider the matter.

The Department of Justice (DOJ) has called for the request to be dismissed, saying its underlying arguments have already been “definitively rejected.”
TikTok and ByteDance say an injunction is also justified because Donald Trump is about to replace Joe Biden as president.
Trump has previously indicated he would overturn the law.
“The public interest favours providing sufficient time for the Supreme Court to conduct an orderly review process, and for the incoming Administration to evaluate this exceptionally important case,” ByteDance and TikTok said in their emergency legal filing.
They added that even a temporary ban from early 2025 would have “devastating effects” on its operations.
It would be “inflicting irreparable injury by silencing Petitioners and the 170 million Americans who use the platform each month,” the filing added.
The company also said that even a temporary ban could cause a loss of revenue, as well as a loss of users and creators who make content for the platform.
On Friday, judges rejected the idea that the law was unconstitutional - saying it was the result of “extensive, bipartisan action” by lawmakers.
They further concluded the law was “carefully crafted to deal only with control by a foreign adversary, and it was part of a broader effort to counter a well-substantiated national security threat posed by the PRC (People’s Republic of China).”
