Election Day has arrived in Oklahoma. Here is some information about state and local races, as well as what you'll need if you plan on casting your ballot.

05/11/2024

Happy Election Day, Oklahoma! Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. across the state. If you are voting via mail-in ballot, your ballot must be received by your county election board by 7 p.m. today.

You can find your assigned polling location on the OK Voter Portal. Free transit services via Embark and MetroLink Tulsa are available to help you get to your polling place.

In Oklahoma, employers must allow their employees who are registered to vote two hours to go to the polls if applicable. For more information about how the law applies, visit the Oklahoma State Election Board website.

OPINION: The local citizen reading a newspaper paper for free certainly wouldn’t want people ripping off his business. But people don’t understand why they have to pay for news. And many don’t trust the media, particularly the national kind. Unfortunately, inaccurate reports and bias have eroded trust.
How did we get here? Read this commentary written by Oklahoma Media Center's executive director published by Oklahoma Voice.

So even if you refuse to pay for news, it is not free. It takes money to produce documented, verified news that is fair-minded and ethical.

Our collaborative's local news literacy campaign is highlighted in this new essay by William McKenzie, senior editorial advisor of the George W. Bush Institute at the George W. Bush Presidential Center. "The one-minute animated presentation, which is modeled after the 'Schoolhouse Rock!' series of short films, emphasizes how holding leaders accountable, reporting on government agencies and verifying facts secure our liberties," McKenzie wrote of the "Free Press Isn't Free" song by Hosty animated by Mechanism Digital. The nonpartisan Bush Institute is a policy organization that develops leaders, advances policy and takes action to solve today’s most pressing challenges.

Thanks to America's Newspapers for this article on our "Free Press Isn't Free" video! It includes a song by Hosty and"Schoolhouse Rock!"-influenced animation by Mechanism Digital and was supported by a Kirkpatrick Foundation grant. That OKC-based foundation previously funded scientific polling by Pat McFerron and academic research by Rosemary Avance and Allyson Shortle for our Ecosystem Engagement Project partnership with Trusting News, which coached a recent cohort of a dozen newsrooms executing data-driven projects to enhance trust. That multiphase project’s research ultimately inspired messaging for Hosty's lyrics. Support our collaborators here: https://oklahomamediacenter.com/the-free-press-isnt-free/

We’ve forgotten historical perspective. In the American Revolution, the founders realized the free press is a pillar of our representative democracy that must remain independent of government rule.
Now the nonprofit Oklahoma Media Center is looking for partners as we embark on a local news literacy campaign.
