Go Wind Newspaper!

Launching a new media outlet is an adrenaline-pumping, sleep-depriving, frustration-inducing, high-risk prospect. And that’s in the best of times. The summer issue of Quill features stories on media outlets that launched this past year — The Wind newspaper, Ms. Mayhem, The 19th and BridgeDetroit. And it includes a Q&A with Lindsay Peoples Wagner, editor-in-chief of The Cut. https://bit.ly/3hbralk

Did you know that you can access out-of-print issues of beloved neighborhood newspapers such as the Noe Valley Voice, Telegraph Hill Semaphore, El Tecolote, New Bernal Journal, and the Richmond ReView for free online?

SF Heritage is proud to have supported the digitization of over 400 new issues in the Neighborhood Newspapers of San Francisco project through our Alice Ross Carey Preservation Fund.

Since 2013, community history project Shaping San Francisco and a team of volunteers with the San Francisco Department of Memory have digitized over 2,300 neighborhood newspapers as part of the grassroots project, which preserves long out-of-print issues of the papers listed above — many rescued from old filing cabinets and cardboard boxes in people's garages. Topics found in the papers reflect a changing landscape of civic life in San Francisco from the 1960s to the present.

This is a wonderful resource for those looking to explore neighborhood history, and you can browse the growing collection here: https://archive.org/details/sanfrancisconewspapers

"It's deeply troubling that in 2020, there are seven members of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors who do not understand that and ironically, on a basic level, come dangerously close to sharing the president's impulse to punish the press."

Why we need to preserver and protect San Francisco's independent press. Save SF News!

That San Francisco supervisors are not journalists and unclear about the principles of the First Amendment was clearly evident during a lengthy conversation at the December 1 board meeting where the merits of "good journalism" were debated.
