Schools are truly the heart of any neighborhood, and in Wallingford, we’re lucky to have some wonderful options. When my family was deciding where to put down roots, finding the right schools quickly became a priority. At the time, we were told to look at the high school rankings first and assume the elementary and middle schools feeding into it would be solid....

The month of January is named in honor of the Roman god Janus, who is symbolic of beginnings and transitions. For many of us, January is a time of optimism, filled with resolutions and plans for the New Year. Gardeners are optimists by nature and we commonly shrug off our failed harvests with a “Well, there’s always next year”. Winter is a time of rest in the garden as our dark, cold, rainy weather does not support new plantings and the crops we have overwintered are few and far between....

In April 2024, Seattle Parks & Recreation began a public engagement process for renovating the play area at Meridian Playground. This project aims to make site improvements to the play area located within the western half of the former Home of Good Shepherd property. Most components of the play area were constructed in the early 1980s, and revised in 2002, and some equipment was replaced through a Neighborhood Matching Fund project in 2011....

One of the endearing and enduring features of Wallingford is that it is full of little jewels, unique establishments that are often overshadowed and overlooked because of the oversized influence of other places and events. But nestled right in the heart of the neighborhood, on 45th, is a restaurant called Harvest Beat that is quite wonderful. Those of you who peruse Facebook, the newly ungoverned purveyor of discord and distress, might have occasionally seen offers from Harvest Beat in the Wallingford & Fremont group for friends and family discounts for their 5-course prix fixe (fixed price) vegan dinners....

After 50 years serving the PNW twist on Mexican food, Taco Time on 45th and Corliss closed in July. According to an article published in The Seattle Times, business slowed significantly during the pandemic, and increases in the cost of labor and food caused them to close this location. The funky mirrored glass building, built in 1990, was soon covered with graffiti and its parking lot was littered with trash. ...

On January 8th, the editorial staff at Wallyhood held one of our irregular gatherings with writers, potential writers and editors, and any other curious or interested community members. The Blue Star Café graciously hosted us in their back room and kept us fueled with IPA and appetizers. The purpose of the meeting was, as usual, to recruit and engage. We successfully lured in around ten friends and neighbors to sit with the four of us editors for around an hour and a half....

Wallyhood received word, late last week, that the Seattle Public Library (SPL) is partnering with Key Bank to provide financial education in our neighborhood. The first two classes, especially, struck me as timely, after folks see their bills after the holiday season. Key Bank staff will discuss financial education on these topics on the next three Tuesdays, at the Solid Ground Building (Cheryl Cobbs Murphy Room) from 3-4 pm:...

It’s been a few years since we did an annual wrap on the Year in Wallyhood. But this year, we’re bringing it back: a list of our top ten stories ranked by page views*. To put these numbers into perspective, wallyhood gets about 15,000 page views every month and about half as many unique visitors. Business-related stories (openings and closings) dominated our top ten in 2024 but we also see festival news and trees falling over....

Wallyhood wants to connect! Your neighborhood blog can't operate in a vacuum, although all of our major media role models (recall our unofficial motto, "It's not like we're the New York Times") do just fine in the far reaches of outer space. We're inviting you to come meet us and talk about potentially involving yourselves in the venture that is Wallyhood....

It was a dark and drizzly week night in early December when I met a friend to check out one of our area's new wine bars, Respite. Seems like a perfect opening for a detective story, and I had some sleuthing to do, as the concept of sustainable wine is new to me. Two friends, Haley Meade and Madisyn Scribner, founded their business in 2022, and opened its permanent location at…...

Respite, specializing in sustainable wines, now open on Stone Way.

Like all good community blogs, we at Wallyhood like to keep our readers informed about critical infrastructure…like what’s open/closed in the neighborhood on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. In the past, we’ve tried to make the rounds to actually ask businesses what their plans are. Unfortunately, we are but four highly unpaid volunteer editors and a rotating stable of equally highly unpaid writers, and we’ve been unable to completely canvass Wallingford establishments....
