Memorial City Hall to present Dale Watson and his Lonestars:

Marshall, TX- Dale Watson, keeper of the true country music flame, is coming to Memorial City Hall on Saturday, October 29, at 7:30 pm.

Sponsored by Master Craft Wood Works, Mark A. Trexler- President & CEO, this show is for true-country music fans. Tickets are on sale now at www.memorialcityhall.com or call the Box Office at 903-934-7992 Mon-Fri 8-5.

Dale has flown the flag for classic honky-tonk for over two decades. He’s christened his brand of American roots “Ameripolitan,” to differentiate it from the current crop of Nashville-based pop country. He is a country music maverick, a true outlaw who stands alongside Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, and George Strait as one of the finest country singers and songwriters from the Lone Star State.

“I’m one of Dale’s biggest fans,” said Willie Nelson.

Dale’s latest album, Call Me Insane, was recorded in Austin with veteran producer Lloyd Maines, known for producing Robert Earl Keen, Jerry Jeff Walker and others. Album highlights include “Jonesin’ For Jones,” a love song to the music of the legendary George Jones, “A Day at A Time,” about “getting by by barely getting by;” “Call Me Insane,” the album’s moody title track; “Bug Ya for Love,” a fun warning to all the single ladies, and “Mamas Don’t Let Your Cowboys Grow Up to Be Babies.” (Yes, it is an answer song to the Waylon Jennings/Willie Nelson hit.) “Crocodile Tears” is a tear-in-your-beer country song that sounds like an instant classic and “Burden of The Cross” reveals Watson’s serious side.

This show will certainly sell-out, so get your tickets now before they’re gone. All shows at Memorial City Hall are presented in association with the 92.3 The Depot, QX-FM, AMI Radio Group, Stagecoach Media, The Marshall News Messenger, and 103.9 KMHT with a special thanks to the Texas Commission on the Arts for their support! Memorial City Hall is located at 110 East Houston St., on the historic town square in downtown Marshall.

Chili Dogs Anyone?

Back by popular demand, a Chili Dog Luncheon will be sponsored again by the Harrison Extension Education Association on Friday, November 3, 2022. Lunch will be served from 11:00am to 1:00pm. If you want to enjoy a delicious lunch of a chili dog, chips, cookies and tea or water, then make your way to the Harrison County Extension Office at 102 West Houston Street.

The Harrison County Extension Office is located on the south side of the square on the second floor of the Courthouse Annex building. Tickets are now on sale for $8.00 per person and may be purchased from any Harrison Extension Education Association member or at the Harrison County Extension Office. Dine in or take out lunches will be available.

This is a fund raising event for the Harrison Extension Education Association to support county educational activities such as youth activities, community service and educational learning experiences for club members.

Did you know that the Texas Extension Education Association (TEEA) was organized in August 1926 on the Texas A&M University campus? The primary purpose for organizing was to establish a scholarship for a deserving 4-H girl. Harrison County was proud to have the first recipient (Golden Evans) of this award in 1927. Years later, a scholarship was established in Vondell McLendon’s (former Harrison County resident) honor. Mrs. McLendon served two years as a District 5 Texas Extension Education Association Director. These scholarships have grown through the years, seven 4-H members receive one each year across the district. TEEA also gives three career scholarships to TEEA members to help them further their education.

Harrison County is also known to have the first African American District 5 Texas Extension Education Associate Director, Eulah McNeice, to serve on the State Board for a two year term.

Circle your calendars for November 3rd and join us for some good eating! For more information, contact the Harrison County Extension Office at 903.935.8414.

Texas A&M Forest Service kicks off third annual Leadership Institute
The Texas A&M Forest Service Leadership Institute hosted the kick-off session for its third cohort Oct. 11 to 13 in The Woodlands, Texas. Institute founders strive to provide a transformative experience for participants, with aspirations of leaving a lasting effect on their ability to lead in daily environments.

The Leadership Institute offers a constructive and inspiring learning environment, enabling opportunities for personal growth by giving participants access to tools and speakers that will strengthen their leadership skills.

“Texas A&M Forest Service has many partners that don’t have access to this type of formal leadership training,” said Hughes Simpson, Texas A&M Forest Service Forest Resource Development Chief Operating Officer. “We believe as an agency that by building the capacity of our partners through leadership training, we can help strengthen their organizations and help further the overall reach and mission of Texas A&M Forest Service.”

This year’s class boasts a diverse group of 20 members from natural resource organizations across the state including association directors, fire chiefs, conservation managers and organization executive directors.

“I am honored to be a part of such a great event,” said Dr. Quinn McColly of Texas Water Trade. “The presentations were interactive and the concepts can be applied in the professional and personal environment and beyond.”

The vision for the institute is to establish a program that will rally existing and emerging leaders within the fields of natural resources and increase their capacity and ability to enact meaningful change throughout the state of Texas.

One key to success for the institute is including dynamic and engaging speakers. In this session, participants heard from Frank Keck about building a united team and foundations of leadership, Dr. Geoff Tumlin about ethics in leadership and Amy Hays about generational intelligence.

“I find the best leaders are the most self-aware  they know who they are and where they’re going,” said Keck, CoreBuild CEO. “Our goal is to really help leaders in different natural resource capacities to develop themselves, to invest in these leaders to make a better Texas.”

Through the leadership institute, Texas A&M Forest Service hopes to continue to grow and support local leaders while increasing the network of natural resource professionals across the state with each class.

Over the next several months, the class will participate in monthly lunch and learns, networking opportunities and course activities. The class will graduate from the institute in April, after a second three-day session, which will have a new lineup of speakers and leadership trainings.
