This is a video of me modding an EVGA Z15, and although I really enjoyed modding and painting it for my wife Jae, in the end it doesn’t have the aesthetic we both wanted. This came down to color choice, and little details, like the obscure EVGA branding, that made other boards more aesthetic from a visuals perspective. That being said, I do have to hand it to EVGA.

If you are a returning viewer, or like this video, please consider liking the page / subscribing to the channel on YT!
This board checked most of the boxes, from the hot-swap sockets, to the extremely satisfying volume roller, this board was a really great basis for modding. The black aluminum finish looked great to begin with, and the build quality, like the magnetic wrist rest, and the inclusion of an aluminum weight really made this board stick out from the vast majority of consumer boards that you can get.

The negatives of this board were the ABS keycaps, non-detachable USB cable, and the branding being a little too front and center, literally.
The switches that came with the EVGA were Kaihl speed silvers, and weren’t too bad to take apart, l**e, and reassemble.

The PBT Totoro keycaps I bought for my wife, were from a Chinese seller on newegg. I did pay a little too much for them at the time, but was happy with the quality of the dye sublimation.

The tray mount design with around 16 screws was easy to take apart, but there were some screws under the rubber feet on the bottom, which is always annoying to deal with.

Painting the Plate went extremely well. The two thin coats of primer, and two coats of matte top coat went on easily and cleanly. When painting with rattle cans, just be sure to do some test sprays, the nozzle distance should be around 8 inches from the plate, and use smooth movements. Being in a well ventilated area is a must.

After letting each coat dry for just over an hour, and the final coat dry for a couple more, The board was ready to reassemble. The paint matched the color we were going for, but didn’t hit a home run for us in the end. I may try to repurpose this board, and re-paint it in the future, but for now we’re going to break in the switches and enjoy the experience.

Should you buy the Drop CTRL: (9:20)
Outro: (10:18)

The Drop CTRL is the most well-known mid-level enthusiast keyboard, and although it is a spectacular board, it does have some minor drawbacks to its otherwise stunning composition. In this video, I will give an overview of the board, mod the keyboard with different key switches, try out some different keycap profiles, and then give you a sound test of each setup, before and after.
This keyboard features Hot-swap sockets, dual USB C input, RGB, QMK support, PBT shine through keycaps, and custom switches with a form of fiber optics they call “light pipes” to increase light transfer through to the keycaps. These RGB friendly switches are only available on Drop.com

The RGB has many built in lighting modes, and the SMD LEDs are sunken below the PCB to increase switch compatibility, one feature that cheaper boards, like the royal kludge RK68, often overlook. But one feature the cheap RK68 has that this PCB doesn’t have is 5 pin support. Furthermore, at the 200$ price point, I can gripe that the lighting strip looks atrocious with poorly diffused light. The black finish is great, but attracts fingerprints.

The board is well constructed, and feels very sleek. But It doesn’t come with a wrist rest.
I also feel that at this price point, there should either be built in macro support, or support other than QMK that makes programming the keyboard a little easier.

I don’t want to lie: Overall, I am very impressed, but these facts beg to question: With boards that have more features, like the Everest Max, with a detachable number pad, and media dock, and boards, like the GMMK TKL, that have many of the same features at less than half the price, why get this particular board? I have one answer: The one feature that the majority of competing boards don’t have: The case is 100% solid aluminum, not just the top plate.

But this combination of a solid case and the stiff switches attributed to the most annoying problem that I have ever had with a keyboard: Switch ping.

Because the other switches were sold out, this board originally shipped with 65g Halo clears, which had an unbearable amount of spring ping and a high actuation force. Here is what it sounded like:
The harmonics from the case allowed for neighboring springs to resonate, which you will be able to hear from the sound tests of the Halo Clear.

I’ll share with you a secret: the best way of eliminating switch ping isn’t greasing your springs, it is using softer springs.

So, I ordered some 45g Gold-Plated springs, to replace the stiff steel ones.

Because I couldn’t stand the constant sound of a tuning fork while I waited for the new ones to arrive, I swapped in some Kailh box browns.

Lubing the box switches was a little annoying because the stems are oddly shaped, and the top housings have integrated sliders that are hard to align.

I Clipped, band-aid modded, and l**ed the plate mounted stabilizers, and put it all back into the board.

When the gold-plated 45g springs arrived, I began to l**e, spring swap, and reassemble the halo clear switches. I am really happy with how much better the Halo clears feel and sound, as there is no more spring ping, more tactility, and an unrivaled smoothness now that they are l**ed with Krytox 205g0. Use the link and coupon code down below for 5% off at keyboardl**e.com.
Do I feel that this keyboard can be improved? yes.

despite the small gripes that I have with this keyboard, the overall construction, feel, and sound of it in the long run is unparalleled, and I can overlook many of the missing features that other boards have when I have ways around them.

This is a video of modding my GMMK full size (100%) with l**ed gateron reds, clipped stabilizers, band-aid modded stabs, and HyperX keycaps. I do some keyboard build ASMR in the later half of the video.

In this video:
Overview of the GMMK Full Size: (0:00)
How to open the GMMK Full Size: (0:41)
Lubing Gateron Red switches: (0:45)
Modding the stabilizers and reassembly: (1:04)
Sound test, before: (1:18)
Sound test, after: (1:51)
Closing thoughts, Outro: (2:22)

This is the GMMK Full Size. I bought it from Microcenter for 59$ Much like the other GMMK models, it features a sturdy aluminum top plate with a nice finish and clean aesthetic and hot swap sockets. Many of the same features GMMK is known for like a fingerprint resistant finish, weights, and foam padding are here, but unlike the other models, it does not include a detachable USB C, which was surprising. Because I prefer TKL sizes, this one fact did make me like the TKL and compact models more. Regardless, this board is a fantastic entry into the world of mechanical keyboards.

I chose to outfit this board with Gateron Red switches and hyperx keycaps.

After recording some sounds, I removed all the switches and l**ed them with Krytox 205g0. I normally use tactile switches, but because I was using linear switches, I didn’t have to worry about not getting any lubricant on the stem legs. I then Clipped and band-aid modded the Stabilizers. Just like the other GMMK models I own, it was extremely easy to mod, and made an improvement that is easy to hear. Take a listen to the before and after.

I do suggest getting this board if you prefer the 100% layout, you are on a budget, and already have some switches and keycaps. the compact or the TKL, the GMMK boards are great choices, but just like this model are not wireless.

As always if you like this video, please like, comment and subscribe for more content.

This is a video of me modding my GMMK compact with Lubed Kailh Box Red's with Krytox 205g0, and clipped stabs.

In this video:

GMMK compact overview: (0:00)
Keyboard Mods: (0:33)
Sound test, before: (1:15)
Sound test, after: (1:47)
Final thought, Outro: (2:25)

After buying several hot swap boards from amazon, I couldn't help but buy this board, to see how it feared against the other small form factor keyboards.

After modding this keyboard I spent several days letting the board grow on me, and even though it doesn't have arrow keys, I found myself impressed with many features, including the usability, but especially the sound and feeling of the Box Reds, which are some of the most stable switches I have felt.

This is the GMMK Compact. In this video I give you a quick overview of the board, show you how I modded it, and then Give you a sound test of before and after.

I bought it for 59$ from microcenter, after a botched attempt to buy a graphics card.

I also bought some Kaihl box reds that were Gloriously branded, and some Crystal Crown Keycaps.

This barebones keyboard is Hot-swappable, USB C, 60%, RGB, and made with premium features like weights, built in foam, and a great finish that doesn’t leave fingerprints.

After recording the before key sounds, I took off all the keycaps, which were on so tight that it actually pulled some of the switches out of the sockets.
I opened the Kaihl box reds with tweezers because I didn’t have a Kaihl switch opener, and l**ed them with Krytox 205g0 – link down below –

I clipped and band-aid modded the stabilizers. In the sound test you will hear that the spacebar didn’t have l**e on one of the stabilizers which made it sound terrible.

After putting all of the switches back in the board, I put on a set of crystal crown keycaps, which looked absolutely spectacular.
Take a listen to the before and after.

This keyboard is on a fast track to being my favorite small form factor keyboard, and I am very impressed with the overall quality, feel, and sound of this keyboard after mods.

This is a video of me modding my Qisan Magic force 68.

in this video:
Introduction: (0:00)
How to open the Magicforce 68: (0:31)
Modding the switches and stabilizers: (0:44)
Silicone inserts and foam mod: (0:53)
Adding LEDs to the Magicforce 68: (1:00)
Sound test, Before and After: (1:30)
Outro: (2:34)

A keyboard I bought several years ago from Drop. It features a distinct 68 key layout, aluminum plate. a detachable micro usb, and a small degree of tilt. I had never owned a blue switch keyboard, and I felt that this keyboard would be a good platform to mod later. Being a few years later, the consumer scene for keyboards has changed and this keyboard is now lacking in several features, that make it outdated, and over-priced.

So Now’s the time for me to mod it. I decided to put in some Gateron Browns. It was a little annoying to have to remove the rubber pads in order to open the board, but after some

Instead of a foam mod I placed some silicone in between the ridges of the case, and then placed a thin layer of foam on top. I removed all of the old blue switches, and l**ed up some gateron browns. I installed them pretty easily, and after soldering them back into place, I clipped the stabilizers and band-aid modded the PCB

It was after this point that I felt really great about this keyboard, and admittedly should have left it, but I did find that this board supported LED’s and decided to add some and hotwire them. I didn’t have the correct kind of resistors, but soldered them on anyway, and ended up bricking my board after a couple days, with a botched repair.

What I learned was – don’t cut corners with getting the right components, and don’t let being in a rush make your decisions related to how you mod your keyboard. Do it the right way.

This board looked great with the Tai-Hao PBT set and green LED’s If you would like me to try this again, the right way, please hit that like button, comment your thoughts, and hit that subscribe button.

I modded my E-yooso / War falcon Z-77 keyboard with Foam and Band-aids. Take a listen to the before and after the small upgrades!

In this video:
Z-77 review and overview: (0:00)

I am currently on a quest to find the best hot swap keyboards under $100, and found several good options on amazon. This was the fifth keyboard that I decided to mod out of several, and found that the results were pretty good, but could have been better because of the poor quality of switches.

I chose the TKL instead of a smaller 60% or full size for three reasons: I wanted a standard layout, so I can change the keycaps, I did want arrow keys, but didn't want to have to rely on a number pad anymore.

I will also be trying out and modding the Womier K87, the EPOMAKER SK64S, Royal Kludge RK68 (RK855), and GMMK TKL

Most of the keyboards will be brown switches, but a couple of them will be linear. It will be a mixture of optical, gateron, cherry, Zealios V2, among others.

Overall I feel that this model was the cheapest and had the least number of features. The others have other things going for them, like the best for your money, highest quality, most unique, and most aesthetic.

I will be doing a series finale for these hot-swap boards, and we'll see where it goes!

NEXT up is the Finale!

Thanks to for posting his E-element Board for me to find where the final screw was! I'm a fan of his videos, check him out if you liked this video!

I modded my K87. This video is apart of a series I am creating: The best hot swappable keyboards under $100.

The Womier K87 is a 75% TKL mechanical keyboard much like the Womier K66 and womier K60. This K87 review hopes to show how moddable this keyboard is, and how to upgrade it!

In this video:
K87 overview: (0:00)
Foam mod: (0:18)
Stabilizer and Key switch Mods: (0:45)
Sound Test, Before: (1:29)

I am currently on a quest to find the best hot swap keyboards under $100, and found several good options on amazon. This was the third keyboard that I decided to mod out of several, and found that the results were pretty good.

I chose the K87 instead of the smaller K66 or K60 for two reasons: I wanted a standard layout, so I can change the keycaps, and I wanted arrow keys. Other than the layout they seem to be identical boards, so you should be able to mod the Womier K66 or K60 in the exact same way as this video.

I will also be trying out and modding the Glorious Modular Mechanical Keyboard (GMMK) TKL, the EPOMAKER SK64S, Royal Kludge Rk68 (RK855), and Eyooso Mechanical Gaming Keyboard (maybe not this one).

Most of the keyboards will be brown switches, but a couple of them will be linear. It will be a mixture of optical, gateron, cherry, Zealios V2, among others.

Overall I feel that this model was the most visually impressive, with the RGB on, or off. The others have other things going for them, like the best for your money, cheapest, most unique, and best made (premium materials)

I will be doing a series finale for these hot-swap boards, and we'll see where it goes!

This SK64 review is meant for those who like to modify and improve their keyboard.
This video is apart of a series I am creating: The best hot swappable keyboards under $100.

Overview of the Epomaker SK64S: (0:00)
Foam mod and how to open the SK64S: (0:28)
How a Gateron optical switch works: (0:50)
Lubing the optical switches: (1:13)
Sound test, before: (1:49 )
Sound test, after: (2:24)
SK64S review and comments: (2:51)

I bought the EPOMAKER SK64S from amazon with the intent to upgrade it. It is a 83$ hot swap keyboard that is Bluetooth, hot-swappable, and in a 60% layout but still retains the arrow keys. I am a programmer, so having quick access to the arrow keys is a necessity.

I recently bought the Everest Max, and have been loving it, but wanted to see if there were other options out there. I had some spare Zealios V2 switches that I wanted to use, so I went on a mission to try out a bunch of them.

I am currently on a quest to find the best hot swap keyboards under $100, and found several good options on amazon. This was the second keyboard that I decided to mod out of several, and found that the results were pretty good, but this board is so unique that it may not be for you.

I will also be trying out and modding the Glorious Modular Mechanical Keyboard (GMMK) TKL, the Royal Kludge RK68, Womier K87 TKL, and Eyooso Mechanical Gaming Keyboard.

Most of the keyboards will be brown switches, but a couple of them will be linear. It will be a mixture of optical, gateron, cherry, Zealios V2, among others.

Overall I feel that this model was the most unique, but the other boards have other things going for them, like the best looking, cheapest, best priced, and the best made (with premium materials)

This specific keyboard model features Bluetooth 5.1 and can pair with multiple devices, has RGB backlighting, DSA PBT keycaps (NOT lit up legends), multiple different backlight modes, with several speed options, multi-layer function mapping. Options are NOT printed on the caps, but there are dedicated arrow keys, and has a great keycap texture, and comfortable spring weight.

Most of the keyboards will be brown switches, but a couple of them will be linear. It will be a mixture of optical, gateron, cherry, Zealios V2, among others.

Overall I feel that this model was the best bang for your buck at 56$, but the others have other things going for them, like the best looking, cheapest, most unique, and the best made (with premium materials)

This specific keyboard model features Bluetooth 5.1 and can pair with 5 devices, Cool blue backlighting (non-RGB), backlit keycaps (lit up legends), multiple different backlight modes (17) with several speed options, mult-layer function mapping, options printed on the legends, dedicated arrow keys, and has a great keycap texture, and comfortable spring weight.
