Thanks so much to everyone who has supported the Delaware Independent over the past year. Sadly, this morning's story was our last feature article as the Independent is shutting down as of today. You can read more about the reasons for this here.

Almost a year ago, the Delaware Independent launched with a mission: Bring quality local news coverage to southern Delaware, especially in areas that don’t get a lot of attention from other papers. I think we met that goal, although you can judge for yourself. What we did not do

Southern Delaware is full of interesting and surprising people and places. This is just one example.

Every morning, the goldfinches and bluebirds come visit the lush meadow wildflowers. They are among the many birds and visitors to the Delaware Botanic Gardens at Pepper Creek east of Dagsboro. The lush meadow, shrubs, trees, bulbs and mature hardwoods lining this tributary of the Indian River inclu...

So houses are too expensive for many people in southern Delaware. Is making them super small a good solution?

Minimal. Like one-word ledes, the tiny home movement aims to get right down to the essentials. Some want a cute, sleek bonsai house they can show off on Instagram, some want to live without so much stuff encumbering their lives, and others see a way to ease the housing crisis.

The Nanticoke Nation is an integral part of life in Sussex County. This is by far the most difficult post I have had to share. This evening our Dad, boss, mentor, best friend, and prayer partner was welcomed into his eternal home with Jesus. Our hearts are aching, but we are rejoicing for him. He is no longer suffering, but reunited with Mom, the love of his life.

I feel like there is so much to say, but right now, I am at a loss for words.

He didn’t just love what he did, he loved who he did it for. I hope each one of you know how much he loved and appreciated you.

Matt and I would like to thank all of our friends/customers for the outpouring of love and prayers the past few weeks.

Miss and love you so much Dad!! 💔

Demand is sky high for housing that working people can afford. So what's keeping builders from meeting that demand?

The critical shortage of affordable housing in southern Delaware prompts a simple question: Why not get busy building more, as soon as possible? After all, the demand is there, so why don’t builders meet it? As usually happens with simple questions, the answer isn’t so easy. Those who

When it comes to education, the effects of the pandemic will likely be felt for some time. But local educators have hope that things are improving going into next school year.

Veteran middle school teacher Giffin Bowen has learned ways to defuse classroom tension. When kids get their phones out, for example, he tries not to make it a big issue but just makes them put the phone away. If they refuse instructions in situations like that, he’ll give them

Is the game of horseshoes disappearing? Not if these enthusiasts have anything to say about it.

When was the last time you played horseshoes? A small but dedicated group in Seaford hopes your answer will be “This week at Jays Nest park.” They are organized by Seaford resident Wayne Apgar, who promotes horseshoes with the enthusiasm of an evangelist. Enthusiasm can be contagious, and even b...

A bitter divide was reflected in dueling reactions downstate to the Supreme Court's Friday decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.

The political earthquake happened Friday, and reactions were swift. The possibility once seemed remote that Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court decision laying out a nationwide right to abortion, would ever be overturned. But Friday morning news broke that the Supreme Court had done just that. In souther...

Everyone has been urged to stomp on, squish, and otherwise eliminate the invasive spotted lanternfly. Jeremy Cox of Bay Journal Media has more on how that's going.

Despite quarantines, public squashing campaigns and federally subsidized bug-spraying blitzes, the spotted lanternfly continues its stubborn game of hopscotch across the Mid-Atlantic region. Pennsylvania added 11 counties to its quarantine zone earlier this year, raising the total to 45. Maryland de...
