Interesting place

The Memorial Tunnel runs through Paint Creek Mountain in Kanawha County, West Virginia. The two-lane tunnel opened for public use in 1954. At that time, it was considered to be “engineering of the future” as it was the first tunnel in the U.S. to be monitored by closed-circuit television.

The Memorial Tunnel cost $5 million to build, an astronomical amount at that time. The end result was a tunnel 2,802 ft in length. It was originally a part of the West Virginia Turnpike but that changed in the 1980s, when the Turnpike designed a bypass to prevent bottlenecks that kept happening. The rest of the Turnpike had already been widened to four lanes and this tunnel, along with its lower speed limit, was beginning to create havoc.

The last vehicle went through on July 7, 1987. Following its closure, it was used for different types of ventilation experiments. In 2000, the tunnel was chosen by the Center for National Response to be used for anti-terrorism training.

They did all manner of interesting experiments including simulating collapsed buildings, a faux-subway station, and a simulated 50-car pileup vehicle wreck.

The Center for National Response ceased using it in 2020 and, now, it is used as a mushroom farm…believe it or…don’t believe it (don’t want to get sued by Ripley’s)

“There was no practical explanation for why I was climbing up a steep, rocky path in a forgotten little corner of West Virginia, searching for the grave of Devil Anse Hatfield, the leader of the notorious Hatfield clan of Hatfield-McCoy infamy. The feud has been over for more than 100 years ... But curiosity is a powerful thing, and on a recent road trip through West Virginia and Kentucky, with my wife and two sons, I ventured off the interstates onto a series of winding backroads to learn more about America’s most famous family feud.

“… When William Anderson “Devil Anse” Hatfield died of pneumonia at 81, his heirs sent photos of him to a craftsman in Italy, who constructed an impressive marble statue with his likeness. The statue towers over all the other memorials in the cemetery.”
