FINAL UPDATE: ROADWAY IS NOW CLEAR

All debris has been removed from the roadway, and the streets are now passable. There is still some equipment in the area as well as power, cable, and phone crews working to restore affected services. Please continue to use caution in the area for the sake of these men and women. Also please understand that while the roadway is now clear, it may still be some time before services such as Power, Phone, Cable etc are fully restored. Thank you all for your patience in this matter.

❗️⚠️❗️TRAFFIC HAZARD ADVISORY❗️⚠️❗️

Please be advised that a very large tree has fallen and is blocking Jackson Rd (Hwy 492) at the intersection of JACKSON RD & LONG ST in the City of Union this morning. Power and Cable lines are down, and the roadway is impassable at this time. Responders from Union PD, Union Street Department, MDOT, MaxxSouth, and Mississippi Power are currently on the scene and working at as fast and as hard as possible to clear the roadway and restore affected services. Please be cautious as you travel in this area this morning as it will still be quite some time before the roadway is clear. If you need to travel in the area this morning, we suggest seeking an alternate route around this small section of Jackson Rd. We appreciate your continued patience as crews work to get this cleared up. We will update as we can. -03:12am

Update 1: MDOT crews have managed to load one truckload of debris from the roadway. Multiple trucks are on standby waiting to be loaded. We still have no estimate until roadway is clear. -03:58am

Update 2: MDOT has brought a Heavy Crane onto the scene to assist in removing the remaining parts of the tree. We hope to have the roadway cleared soon. Affected service outages may take some time longer to repair after the roadway is cleared.
-05:01am

Update 3: The Last large piece of debris has been loaded onto a flatbed truck via crane and carried away. A street sweeper is now in place to ensure the roadway is entirely clear and safe for travel. Roadway should be opened in the next few minutes.

Severe weather charged through Newton County Saturday night, bringing heavy rain, wind, and at least four tornadoes that touched down in the county. The line of storms that reached the county Saturday night was part of a system that ripped its way through Texas and Louisiana before reaching the magnolia state and continuing east.
