What an honor for our Editor-in-Chief, Jennifer Moore Gaston, to be recognized at the Second Annual Veretta and Jessie E. Rider Leadership Award for Community Impact Luncheon, held on December 11, 2024.

This year’s luncheon, themed "A Seat at the Table," brought together 210 attendees who gathered to celebrate the arts and support the ongoing revitalization of North Tyler’s cultural and artistic heritage. The event marked a significant milestone for the Veretta and Jessie E. Rider Fine and Performing Arts Center and the Texas African American Museum, both of which are foundational to the cultural fabric of our community. The funds raised from this event will directly contribute to the completion of these important projects, further enriching the arts scene in East Texas.
The attendance more than doubled compared to last year, with notable speakers such as keynote speaker Michael Coleman KLTV, along with representatives from
Jarvis Christian University and East Texas Baptist University.
Their presence, coupled with the recognition of distinguished community leaders, made this year’s gathering especially meaningful.
A highlight of the event was honoring 2024 Persons of the Year, Jim and Margaret Perkins of the James I. Perkins Family Foundation, for their exceptional and tireless contributions to our community.
The luncheon celebrated the achievements of several remarkable individuals, including:
Dr. Glenell M. Lee-Pruitt, CEO/President of Jarvis Christian University in Hawkins, Texas
Mrs. Jennifer Moore Gaston, Editor-in-Chief of TYLER TODAY Magazine
Mrs. Pamela B. Erwin, CEO of Pamela Erwin & Associates
Mrs. Nancy Rangel, CEO of the Tyler Hispanic Business Alliance
Mrs. Kristen S. Harris, CEO of Family Circle of Care
Mrs. Lisa Abrahams Oepkes, Co-Owner of Holiday Inn Tyler - Conference Center
Mr. Brad Brookshire, Chairman/CEO, Brookshire Grocery Company
Dr. J. Blair Blackburn, CEO/President of East Texas Baptist University in Marshall, Texas
Mr. LeRoy Francis Sr., CEO of the Community Funeral Home Tyler
Mr. Patrick Stacey, Vice President / General Manager of KLTV 7
Mr. Garnett Brookshire , Co-Owner of the People’s Petroleum Building and Plaza Tower
Each of these honorees has made an indelible impact on our community, and it was truly inspiring to recognize their invaluable contributions.
Please support the Veretta and Jessie E. Rider Fine and Performing Arts Center in an effort to nurture the next generation of artists and ensuring the continued vibrancy of our community’s cultural landscape. As they work toward completing the project, they remain committed to providing a dynamic space for creativity, education, and community engagement. Their vision for the center includes offering music and art classes for local youth, who represent the future of our community.
They continue to seek the support of the community. Whether through financial contributions, volunteering, or providing resources, every form of support makes a significant difference. With approximately $250,000 still needed to complete the project, they are eager to collaborate with contractors, architects, and other partners to bring their vision to fruition.
Together, we are creating a brighter future for North Tyler, and we all look forward to continuing this important journey with you.
