7-DAY FORECAST: This afternoon, highs will reach the upper 50s to near 60 and clouds will decrease through the day. Tonight, lows will fall into the low to mid 30s with frost possible by early Thursday morning. Both Thursday and Friday afternoons will feature highs in the 60s. A few showers will be possible Friday afternoon, especially in Deep East Texas. Much cooler air will move into East Texas this weekend, with high temperatures dropping into the 40s by Sunday. By early next week, low temperatures will be in the 20s and even upper teens by Tuesday morning. Remember the 4 Ps, as these will certainly be “pipe-bursting” temperatures. Wintry precipitation will be possible, particularly on Tuesday. However, there remains a large amount of uncertainty regarding how much moisture will be present with the cold air. For now, scattered snow showers look possible on Tuesday across the area.

ARCTIC BLAST: Thursday and Friday will feature high temperatures in the 60s, but much colder air is on the horizon. A large area of Arctic air will move into the country later this week, affecting East Texas by this weekend. On the upper level map below, the cold air can be seen dropping southward by the weekend. Temperatures could be as much as 20+ degrees below normal by early next week.

A couple of showers will be possible across Deep East Texas on Wednesday, but the best chance for some showers will occur on Friday. By the weekend, colder air will begin to move in with lows near freezing once again and highs in the 40s on Sunday.

7-DAY FORECAST: Any precipitation will come to an end later this morning, leaving East Texas with mostly cloudy skies and temperatures in the 30s this afternoon. Tonight, temperatures will fall into the mid 20s with a hard freeze likely. On Saturday, mostly sunny skies are expected and highs will reach the mid 30s. By Sunday, high temperatures will reach the lower 50s under partly cloudy skies and similar conditions are expected each day next week. No additional precipitation is expected through the next 7 days once it ends this morning.

RADAR: I'm curious whether any of this current precipitation showing up on radar is making it to the ground across portions of Van Zandt and Henderson counties and down into Deep East Texas, as well. Let me know what you're seeing out there this morning!

The California fires may actually have an impact on our forecast tomorrow… in terms of evaporative cooling! This could lead to surprises tomorrow! Best wintry weather chances are north of I-20, but those of you from a line stretching from Fairfield to Jacksonville to Henderson to Carthage (along and north of US 79) should be prepared for surprises!

7-DAY FORECAST: A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for counties along and north of the I-20 corridor until noon on Friday. Precipitation is expected to begin around midday Thursday, spreading from west to east throughout the day.

Precipitation types are still uncertain, but freezing rain and sleet are likely for areas near the I-20 corridor with snow being the dominant precipitation type closer to I-30. In Deep East Texas, a cold rain is expected, but some frozen precipitation could mix in from time to time. As temperatures cool overnight Thursday, areas near I-20 will likely see a transition to snow before the precipitation ends Friday morning.

Accumulations will be most significant north of I-20, where 2 to as much as 6 inches of snow is possible. Closer to I-20 where precipitation types are more uncertain, ice accumulations of 0.25-0.5″ will be possible with up to an inch of sleet/snow. In Deep East Texas, no accumulations are expected due to warmer ground temperatures and very little frozen precipitation expected.

Much nicer weather is expected by the weekend with temperatures reaching the 50s by Sunday!

7-DAY FORECAST: Temperatures will remain below average through the week with highs struggling to reach 40 degrees and lows in the 20s. Morning wind chill values will be in the teens, making for a very cold start each day. By Wednesday, cloud cover will start to increase, eventually leading to precipitation chances by early Thursday morning. Lots of uncertainty still exists regarding precipitation types and amounts, but the main idea is that wintry precipitation is becoming increasingly likely later this week.

WINTER WEATHER: Later this week, potential is growing for a winter storm across portions of Texas. That includes us here in East Texas, where rain, sleet, and snow will all be possible. There is still quite a bit of uncertainty regarding precipitation types and any totals, but the main thing to note is that it is becoming *likely* for winter weather across portions of East Texas.
Timing for this will be about a 24-hour period from Thursday morning through Friday morning. As we get closer to the event, details will become clearer and we will be able to pinpoint just who can expect what and any potential accumulations. The current thinking for precipitation types is mapped out below. Keep in mind that these areas are not set in stone and things *will* change between now and Thursday.

It is COLD this morning, East Texas! If you're sending the kids back to school this morning, make sure they're bundled up as we have dangerous wind chills in the teens and single digits. Give yourself some extra time this morning to warm up the car if you're commuting anywhere.

LATE NEXT WEEK: The forecast for next week, particularly in the Wednesday-Friday timeframe, is very complicated. There’s a lot of buzz on social media right now about wintry weather, but never trust any single model output. The truth is, models are all over the place right now, showing multiple different scenarios with vastly different outcomes. I’ll break down a few of those here:

Scenario #1: A low pressure system develops and moves east-northeastward near or just off the Texas Coast. This would bring moisture inland, likely overlapping with some cold air in place. In this scenario, wintry precipitation would certainly be a possibility here in East Texas. Of course, the exact location of the low pressure and how cold it is would ultimately determine totals and precipitation types.

Scenario #2: A low pressure system develops, but stays south well out into the Gulf of Mexico. Depending on how much cold air is in place, either a cold rain or some wintry precipitation would be possible, but limited to the coastal areas of Texas. In this scenario, we would stay mostly dry here in East Texas.

Scenario #3: No low pressure system develops, meaning everyone in Texas would be dry. However, the latest trends seem to be showing this being less likely as many models are showing an area of low pressure developing.

With us still being 5-7 days away, there is plenty of uncertainty. It is even possible that a low pressure system indeed develops, but tracks a little farther inland, limiting any wintry precip closer to the Red River. It’s just a very tricky forecast, as is any wintry forecast in the South. Regardless, next week is going to be COLD with lows in the 20s and highs in the upper 30s/lower 40s. Remember the 4 Ps (pipes, pets, plants, and people) and don’t let the cold air catch you off guard on Monday as you send the kids back to school. Lots of details still need to be worked out, but we’ll definitely keep you updated as the latest information becomes available!

7-DAY FORECAST: High temperatures will be in the low to mid 60s through the first half of the day on Sunday before a powerful cold front drops temperatures below freezing by Monday morning. A few showers and storms are likely on Sunday, especially in Deep East Texas where a couple of storms could be on the stronger side. A hard freeze is likely several nights next week as lows drop into the mid 20s. Highs will only reach the low/mid 40s each day next week. Wintry precipitation is still highly uncertain, but it remains a possibility across portions of Texas. It is still too early to determine whether or not we will see any wintry weather here in East Texas.
