The property is an inholding near Miles Lake on Frost Road (sometimes called Frost Lake or Shaw Lake), north of Twisp River Road, and is completely surrounded by the wildlife area.

The very first event to take advantage of the new stage lighting at the Winthrop Barn — the installation of which was completed just hours before the first act took the stage — was the Winthrop Folk & Roots Festival, held on Oct. 24-25. I first heard Mazama residents called the “spandex crowd” while on a pack trip several years ago. It did not seem like a compliment for healthy active lifestyles, but rather a generalization of the type folks who choose to live in the snowiest, coldest region of the Methow Valley: recreationalists sporting the Lycra uniforms of a variety of chosen sports from biking to skiing to mountain climbing. It carried the connotation of moneyed, entitled interlopers living in window-walled, shed-roofed houses.
