They may be in costumes, or carrying clever hand-crafted signs, or just joining the crowd. In any event, the protestors’ consistency has drawn attention and praise — and made the rallies the top news story of the year in the Methow Valley, according to a poll of our readers.

Shoppers who want a plastic bag to carry their purchases will have to pay 12 cents per bag starting Jan. 1. The 4-cent increase was scheduled in a 2020 state law that bans flimsy, single-use bags and charges for sturdier ones to encourage shoppers to bring their own reusable bags. The law required the bags to be able to carry at least 22 pounds for a distance of 175 feet and to withstand at least 125 uses.
