We are so honored to announce that Opening Number has been selected to screen at the 23rd Annual Sidewalk Film Festival.

Opening Number will screen in downtown Birmingham (ASFA Recital Hall: 800 19th St. N., Birmingham, AL 35203) on Saturday, August 28th at 3:40pm CDT in the Family Shorts category. We would like to say a HUGE congratulations to our lead actor, Avery May, who won BEST YOUTH ACTOR at Venice Shorts Awards in California for his portrayal of Charlie in Opening Number! 🎉🥳 This was announced last night in LA Indies Magazine, along with the other categories, which you can find at the following link:

We are beyond thrilled to announce that Opening Number has been selected as a 2021 Holle Award Finalist! As Kathy would say, “That was brilliant!!!”

Opening Number will premiere on Saturday, March 6th at 9:00 pm at the Black Warrior Film Festival in Tuscaloosa, AL. We hope to see you all there!

That’s a wrap for Day 2! 😱 We are all as tired as Charlie is here, but are excited about getting some rest before a super long day tomorrow! Our shooting schedule went a little different than expected today due to rain, but luckily (thanks to an amazing cast and crew), we were still able to get in some shots at the Bama Theatre!

We have officially wrapped for day one! Everything went very smoothly thanks to our amazing cast and crew. We are so excited to get back out on set bright and early with our actors! If you look REALLY hard, you might be able to spot our actor playing “Charlie” in the second photo from our shoot today! 😊

Sound Technician Colby Barron is a filmmaker based in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. He is a senior Creative Media Major and a Computing Technology and Applications Minor. He is also the Assistant Director of Media for the Black Warrior Film Festival. Since early childhood, Colby has always had an affinity for film and hopes to find any position in the industry.

MEET THE CREW!

Emily Shea (Camera Operator) is a senior at the University of Alabama, studying Creative Media and French. She grew up in Philadelphia, where she fell in love with being behind the camera. This year, Emily has the pleasure of working on numerous films in the camera department including: “For the Record” (2019), “Opening Number”(2020), and “Gas?”(2020). In addition, she is also directing her own original story, “Chew”.

MEET THE CREW!

Our producer Sydney Kahl is a filmmaker and photographer from Helena, AL. Sydney is a senior Creative Media major at UA with a minor in Communication Studies. She has a great passion for documentary work especially but also loves any film and narrative work that she can get her hands on. Sydney’s favorite movie is La La Land which inspired her to follow her aspirations for filmmaking and she hasn’t looked back since.

Fun fact: Sydney’s favorite thing right now is documenting her newborn niece as a digital scrapbook for her!

MEET THE CREW!

Writer and Director Cole Cabiness is a filmmaker, actor, and dancer from Tuscaloosa, Alabama. He is a senior Creative Media major and Theatre minor, and has also recently been accepted to the MBA program at UA through the CREATE Path program. Cole is also an instructor at The Dance Centre in Tuscaloosa, where he teaches tap dance. Growing up in community theatre, Cole’s background is rooted heavily in the world of Broadway and dance, hence inspiring the story that Opening Number follows.

From Cole: “Opening Number revolves around themes relating to connection and encouragement, something that we all strive for and can relate to. Everyone needs a ‘Kathy’ in their life!”
