Today marks the Glorification of Venerable St. Herman of Alaska. St. Herman was part of the first Russian missionary trip to North America and was instrumental in teaching the Native Alaskan people about the love of Christ. He is beloved all across America and has become the patron saint for many churches and families. Blessed Feast of the Transfiguration to all of our New Calendar friends! Today is the seventh anniversary of our own little parish miracle. In the wee hours of the Feast of the Transfiguration in 2017, lightning struck the cuppola of our chapel and traveled down to the icon mounted in the dome of the Church. The first of three Feasts of the Savior in August, it is similar in tone and content to both the Elevation of the Cross and the Sunday of Veneration of the Cross during Lent. ᴛʜᴇ ᴅᴏʀᴍɪᴛɪᴏɴ ꜰᴀꜱᴛ ᴀᴘᴘʀᴏᴀᴄʜᴇꜱFor those on the New Calendar, August 1 is the beginning of the Dormition Fast—fourteen days of prayer and fasting as we prepare to celebrate the feast of the Dormition (Falling Asleep) of the Theotokos. Time to use up your milk and meat, and fill up those jars of lentils and rice!

We have a resource post full of information about this fast and the three Feasts of Our Savior happening in August, as well as suggestions about dietary fasting (including our favorite cookbooks and recipes). On July 27 NS/August 9 OS, we celebrate the Greatmartyr and Healer St. Panteleimon. Beloved around the world for his intercessions on behalf of the faithful, he is one of the best-known healers among Orthodox saints. On July 28 NS/August 10 OS, we remember St. Irene Chrystovolantou of Cappadocia, who has worked countless miracles and is known for her powerful prayers in aid of those who seek them. She is particularly quick to help those who are ill or unable to have children, and apples and oil blessed on her relics are treasured for those purposes.

Between us we have given birth eight times, in a variety of circumstances (at home, in hospital, at a birth center), and there is perhaps no more profound event in any life than becoming a parent. It is humbling, awe-inspiring, and overwhelming. Lives, and especially babies, are impossibly fragile, and it is a tremendous task to be given a life (or lives) to steward. It’s that time!
