It was a privilege to connect with such visionary leaders this morning! 🌟 We hosted Klemmer & Associates, a group guided by the inspiring mission of their founder, Brian Klemmer, to create bold, ethical leaders who envision a world where no one is left out. Our founder, Teresa Knox, led a tour and Q&A, sharing insights about The Church Studio’s history and mission.

J.J. Cale worked closely with fellow Tulsan Leon Russell at Shelter Records, releasing albums like Naturally and Okie. Known for his laid-back guitar style and vocals, Cale’s songs, including “After Midnight” and “Cocaine,” became hits by Eric Clapton.

We’ve lost too many musicians at the young age of 27 (Brian Jones, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain, Amy Winehouse), including the legendary Jimi Hendrix, who would have turned 81 today.
In 1970, Jimi performed in Tulsa—just three months before his untimely passing. Gone too soon, but his music lives on.

On this day 50 years ago, Dwight Twilley recorded his first hit, "I'm on Fire," right here at The Church Studio. Joined by Phil Seymour, the session took place the day before Thanksgiving. 🦃

Jesse Ed Davis on tour with Taj Mahal. ✌️ Davis played guitar and piano on Taj Mahal’s first four albums, performing slide, lead, rhythm, country, and jazz styles. Taj was so impressed with Davis’s playing that he began calling their act The Davis Band. As drummer Chuck Blackwell described, Davis had "a melodic, haunting deal," referring to the distinct emotional quality of his playing. During his three years with Mahal, the band toured England and appeared in The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus. Davis later worked with Eric Clapton, John Lennon, and George Harrison.

In cultures where the right hand is considered respected, it is prestigious to wear a watch on the right wrist. This tradition is rooted in cultural and historical contexts, becoming a symbolic act associated with authority or tradition. Fact or fiction?! ⏰ 🎩

Shelter Records, founded by Leon Russell and Denny Cordell, operated from 1969 to 1981. In 1972, the label set up its Tulsa office at The Church Studio, fostering a "workshop atmosphere" in the converted church. Leon left the label in 1976 after parting ways with Cordell. Notable artists signed to Shelter included J.J. Cale, Dwight Twilley Band, the Gap Band, Freddie King, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, and Phoebe Snow.

The church was built in 1915 and started as Grace M.E. Church. It was converted to a world-class recording studio in 1972 by Grammy-Award winning musician, singer, songwriter, and producer Leon Russell. Once the historic renovation is complete, the beautiful structure will once again become a recording studio, community space and home to the Church Studio Archive. Today, The Church Studio is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a National Landmark.
