Sorg Mansion, 206 South Main Street, Middletown, OH. Middletown’s first millionaire, Paul John Sorg, built the $1 million mansion in 1887 which is now part of Middletown’s South Main Street District. The Ohio Historical Society says Sorg’s “Romanesque castle,” built in 1887, includes “a $100,000 addition [1902] comprised of a north wing with a ballroom, a front porch and turrets, a large carriage house and an imposing stone and iron fence around the five-acre property.” Photo by

In 1869 the Patty family moved to Ohio and had become the caretakers of a covered bridge. Mr. John Patty had two daughters. As the story goes. It was a dark and stormy night. Mr. Patty is making his way home. Just as he nears his homestead, a series of shrieks and moans fill the night air. Arriving near his spring house, his eyes fill with fright as the lightning flashes across the sky. He sees the unthinkable in the tree by the spring house. Who did this to the sisters? Some say a drifter. Another tale paints a new picture of the same sinister acts but by the father himself. Park rangers have reported seeing people dressed in period clothing and park goers have heard girls screaming in the night.

Every April for many years, cemetery workers would find wine bottles broken on the door of the Ely Mausoleum. Though not written on the outside of the mausoleum, records show it is the resting place of Frank P. Stanley, the last King of the Gypsies, as named by The Dayton Journal April 19, 1929 obituary. The son of Eli Stanley and the grandson of the famous "Sugar" Stanley. Though the newspaper reporter who wrote the obituary for Stanley assumed he would be buried at Woodland with many of his father's relatives, it is known that his mother wanted him buried in Calvary, with relatives from her family. For mysterious reasons, perhaps to downplay his gypsy heritage or to prevent other tribes members from conducting their own rituals on his grave, he is entombed anonymously in the Ely Mausoleum here.
