City Lights.

The Oscar Peterson Quartet.

The latest release of some tasty Oscar Peterson Trio/Quartet’s live performances.

As many of you know, Oscar Peterson is one of my absolute favorites so naturally I had to snag this new record.

Recorded live in Munich, Germany back in 1994 (when I was 7 years old and just really discovering music), it features an amazing rendition of “There Will Never Be Another You” and the others songs contained within are performed with such expression and emotion… that’s probably why I never skip an OP record.

Together.

Joe Williams and Harry “Sweets” Edison.

Absolutely a fantastic album that deserves more love.

Joe Williams is one of my favorite male vocalists and this album finds him in great voice. Harry or “Sweets” is just legendary. Always.

Les Baxter’s La Femme.

Les Baxter & Franck Pourcel.

A Monday night spin is required on this slightly warmer winter night.

This album has been on my want list for ages - as I’m a huge fan of easy listening and exotica music.

Recorded in Paris and released in 1956, this Franck Pourcel conducted album encompasses everything that is great about this genre of music - haunting, provocative, and just plain stunning.

L.A. Is My Lady.

Frank Sinatra.

I’ve been thinking a lot about California, especially the greater LA area, over the past week. I thought this album was a perfect fit. I consider California my second home state, after my beloved New York, because my grandparents lived there for most of their lives and I still have a lot of family there. It’s always been a welcoming and beautiful place, and I’ve loved spending time there. I can only hope for everyone’s safety during these tough times - especially our friends in the vinyl community.

As for the music, this 1984 album was the last solo record that Frank made, and his 57th overall album in his long and distinguished career - produced and arranged/conducted by Quincy Jones it features musicians like George Benson on guitar, the Brecker brothers on saxophone and trumpet, and the great Lionel Hampton on vibes, just to name a few.

This is the 2024 40th anniversary remix and reissue - which I was apprehensive about at first, but after a couple of listens, there’s definitely a lot more detail in the music on this. If you’re a hardcore Sinatra fan, definitely grab a copy.

Explorations.

Bill Evans.

So many thanks to the cool cats at Craft Recordings for sending this my way to experience!

This is my first exploration with the Small Batch series from Craft Recordings, and I am impressed. Everything from the packaging and the quality of the tip on jacket and the heavy vinyl itself is nothing short of amazing.

The music of the Bill Evans Trio is sublime, but you knew that already, just as I did going into tonight’s spin.

This entire thing is just… a masterpiece.

Kessel Plays Standards.

Barney Kessel.

This was the last new addition to the collection at the end of 2024 - so it certainly required a proper post in the new year.

Classic jazz standards performed by one of the greatest jazz guitarists on one of the legendary jazz labels.

Can’t beat this for a Tuesday evening.

The Gilded Hawk.

Coleman Hawkins.

Soaring saxophone sounds from the Hawk and lush, supporting orchestrations by arranger and conductor, Glenn Osser, makes this a beautiful album.

Perfect for a Monday evening in January.

Happy Just to Be Like I Am.

Taj Mahal.

My mom is to blame for much of my taste in music - growing up it was a varied sort of artists, genres, and vibes - from The Beatles, Paul McCartney, Mozart, Taj Mahal, and B.B. King to Glen Miller a d Collective Soul.

So naturally when I saw this album sitting in the used blues bin, I knew it was coming home with me - and I’m glad it did.

It’s a great listen from side to side.

The Swingin’s Mutual!

The George Shearing Quintet with Nancy Wilson.

Released in 1961 - this Shearing album features Nancy Wilson’s flawless vocal ability on six of the album’s 12 tracks.

Naturally, Shearing & company are in fine shape and their backing Nancy is effortless, plus the Quintet-only instrumental tracks are perfect.

This was released after Nancy’s debut album with Capitol Records, ‘Something Wonderful’ in 1960 and really showcases the power and control that Nancy had (also extremely evident on her later collaboration with Cannonball Adderley) with these timeless jazz standards.

Of note: Shearing did a number of albums with Capitol Records vocalists, including Nat King Cole, Peggy Lee, and Dakota Staton (featured a couple of weeks ago). All are worth checking on and finding for your collection.

Happy New Year!

The first record of the year is the absolute perfect way to set the tone for the 364 days coming at us.

Wishing you all the best in life and music for 2025 and beyond!

Cheers! 🍻

Hamp and Getz.

Lionel Hampton and Stan Getz.

I’ve been slowly, but steadily adding to my Getz collection - as many OG pressings as possible, so I was thrilled to come across this pressing from 1955.

Hampton’s vibes are on fire and Getz follows with some zesty sax playing throughout this entire set.

Perfect sounds for New Year’s Eve, Eve.

Charm.

Clario.

It’s a perfect day for a rare double post.

What a great album! It took a while to find the right copy of this, but here it is in all its indie pop/rock/folk glory.

Clario’s music is new to me, but it’s got a lovely old world sound to it and it’s co-produced by one of the best in the indie music biz - can’t go wrong with that.

Maggie’s Back in Town!!

Howard McGhee.

Oh damn. I had no idea about Howard or this incredible album until a couple of weeks ago.

This 1961 album is absolutely killer - and deserves a spot in every jazz lovers collection - and that’s just from listening to it nearly daily for the past few weeks (on digital and now LP). Listen to his tone… made to sound simple but damn, his playing is intricate and soulful.

Plus, this recent pressing from Craft Recordings and Acoustic Sounds is sublime… 10/10… no notes.

Jazz From The Pacific Northwest.

Shelly Manne & His Men.

What a great live set that was released as part of RSD 2024 that flew entirely under my radar - that has been corrected and it’s part of the ever growing and evolving collection here at BW HQ.

If you love jazz - and live jazz at that - definitely find a copy.

A Capitol Christmas.

Various Artists.

As many of you know (or could tell) Capitol Records is my all time favorite record labels of old - so when I saw this collection of timeless Christmas/holiday tunes by the essential artists of Capitol’s golden era - I have to have it.

Merry Christmas Eve, friends!

Sharon is and will forever be the soul queen for me and this album will always be one of the best holiday albums ever recorded.

This Time I’m Swingin’!

Dean Martin.

Dino’s stellar 1960 album with the great Nelson Riddle.

I’ve always ranked this album at the very top of Dean’s Capitol era output, and for good reason… it swings.

Dean is cool, and collected and the orchestra is ramping up the tempo and the zest with each subsequent track.

Even the slower ballads have just the right amount of swing.

The sessions for this album also yielded the incredibly well-known hit song, “Ain’t That A Kick In The Head” - which was released as a single.

Just quintessential Dean Martin.

In The Night.

The George Shearing Quintet with Dakota Staton.

This 1958 collaborative album between the well-established Shearing Quintet and new-ish singer, Dakota Staton is absolutely perfect. Each song. Perfect. Each note. Perfect.

These two musicians rarely are spoken of or seen often enough these days - and that’s a damn shame. The Shearing style is ultra cool and Dakota’s vocals are pure jazz/blues bliss. Both of their respective discographies should be given more attention and credit than they currently receive.

Go find a copy of this one - you’ll thank me later.
