New Orleans Mardi Gras is on Tuesday! To celebrate you might indulge in a King Cake. What is a King Cake? ... "Think of it as a giant cinnamon roll housing a tiny, plastic baby Jesus—stay with me—that’s twisted or braided into a circle, covered in icing, and liberally sprinkled with purple, green, and gold sugar."

Buy one locally at:
Eet Gud Bakery in Hamilton
Italian Peoples Bakery and Deli in Trenton
Café du Pain Bakery in Lawrence
Lillipies in Princeton
The Gingered Peach in Lawrenceville

Or you can bake you own with this Food52 :) - f52.co/3BWpPsz

"The name 'king cake' comes from the Biblical story of the three kings who bring gifts to Baby Jesus. A blend of coffee cake and cinnamon roll, king cake is usually iced in yellow, green and purple – the colors of Mardi Gras -- and is frequently packed with fruit fillings and decadent cream cheeses. Hidden within these season sweets also lie a special surprise: a plastic king cake baby to continue the fun." - https://bit.ly/3IoCsPu

After 35 years of serving the workers and visitors of Downtown Trenton, Tom Fowler decided it was time to slow down and sell his restaurant, Checkers Food & Spirits. The iconic bar and grill closed on October 30. The new owners plan to open a new club with a Latin vibe.

Trenton Downtown Association had a nice writeup about Checkers here: https://bit.ly/2YqTjiR

Congratulations to Tom and best of luck in the future. I loved their cheeseburgers and potato salad (and cold beer;). Spent many a good time there for St. Patty's Day, the Bike Race, First Fridays, etc. While I haven't been there in some time - I'll miss it!

The new Lorenzo's? - The Lobby Club is lobbying to fill the void left by the closure of the famous Pete Lorenzo's Cafe with a new private club on Front Street.

Originally opened in 1921, Lorenzo's was THE place where the state's powerbrokers and politicians would meet to enjoy a great meal and broker big deal. Lorenzo's was located on Sout Clinton Ave in Trenton (across from the train station) until it closed in 2009. It was demolished in 2013.

Now, POLITICO is reporting that there is a new spot for the state's powerbrokers: The Lobby Club

Read - "The New Lorenzo's?" by Matt Friedman at https://politi.co/3pjn0x5

Also reported on ROI-NJ - "A look at the Lobby Club, the pricey, members-only restaurant, bar and meeting place that just opened in Trenton": https://bit.ly/3jivm4j

Check out the Lobby Club's website: https://thelobbyclubnj.com/

And their promotional video: https://bit.ly/3EbkPAf

More on Lorenzo's as described in the Trentonian "Pete Lorenzo’s Cafe attracted the political bigwigs, the rich and famous. Sportscaster Bob Costas, Businessman Donald Trump, former New York Governor Tom Dewey, Yankees legend Joe DiMaggio, and members of ‘The Sopranos’ cast were among long list of luminaries that dined at the city steakhouse."
