Rich Brauer’s new Hitchcock style movie ‘The DJ on Wallaker Hill’ that was shot in northern Michigan during a raging winter blizzard in February, is now ready for its first public viewing! The Garden Theater in Frankfort is hosting this special event on December 28th at 7:30pm. https://gardentheater.org/upcoming-events
Brauer will be on hand for a Q&A following the 90 minute film. It would likely have a PG-13 rating.
Interior filming was on a set built to replicate a 1963 AM radio station. The set was constructed by nine students from the CONSTRUCTION TRADES curriculum at the Northwest Education Services Career Tech. “Giving students the chance to work on different aspects of film production is a critical part of our normal protocol’ says writer/director Rich Brauer. “We also had four students from their FILM AND NEW MEDIA department on set during filming to assist our professional crew. Mentoring was everywhere!”
Brauer has produced and directed ten feature films, all shot in northern Michigan. Brauer adds “Not only do we make a movie, but we make a lot of friends”. Brauer was named Michigan Filmmaker of the year in 2009. A portion of the proceeds from this screening will be donated to COGNITION, Beulah’s Science and Discovery Center. The Story:
The DJ on Wallaker Hill
It’s Christmas eve, 1963. A winter blizzard rages outside the tiny hilltop radio station in Michigan’s remote upper peninsula. The lone DJ just wants to finish his shift at midnight and go home.
Things change when the telephone repairman appears. The DJ tries his best to ignore him, which is increasingly difficult since the man won’t leave.
The drama that follows, contained within the cramped walls of the station, unravels the challenge that making the distinction between citizen and criminal can be a difficult and perhaps impossible task.
Johnny gets more for Christmas than he bargained for.

Should be especially cool because of the support from the Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy and the Leelanau Conservancy. A lively Q & A will follow. In case you haven't heard, we're hosting a one-time public screening of our latest feature film "FROZEN STUPID2:OPEN WATER' this coming Wednesday at the glorious State Theater in Traverse City at 7pm. It's a fun comedy based on obsessive fishermen who against all odds, find loving support from their community of friends and wives. We know him in these parts as the writer, director, and producer of the exciting Dogman movies. But storytelling is the actual passion that drives a Brauer Productions, Inc. project—and Dogman is only one of many stories that local filmmaker Rich Brauer has told through his lens.

And it all started here in Benzie County a few decades ago...

“I had just finished 6th grade and was in Beulah for the summer,” he recalls. “I watched a great movie, 'The Blue Max,' at the Crystal Theater [now a vacant lot] and was inspired to become a filmmaker right then and there.”

Pop the popcorn! Our 9th film captured here in Michigan is finished! Shot in Houghton Lake, Michigan in September 2019, we were able to continue the editing process of our family-friendly comedy, Frozen Stupid 2, throughout 2020. "New legislation was presented in Michigan on Thursday that would give incentives to film production companies who operate in the state.

A base tax credit starting at 25% will be provided for in-state spending.

There would be an additional 5% given if a ‘Filmed in Michigan’ logo is included. The legislation was introduced by State Representative Robert Wittenberg who said it’s all about Michigan jobs."

It was 3 years ago today that my long time editor Bob Tomlinson passed away to the CMX console in the sky. . He was with me full-time for 25 years!!! Almost everything I produced during those years was touched by his creativity and engineering skill. He edited a dozen feature films and 100's of commercials and documentaries. He is missed.

I am so happy to announce that we have wrapped filming of our latest feature film comedy Frozen Stupid2:Open Water. Most of the professional actors from the original film, produced in 2006 returned and my crew was excited once again to bring this timeless family friendly comedy sequel to life!

When we came to Roscommon County to make the original Frozen Stupid movie, we made the film, but also made a lot of friends! Highlighting a Michigan community is a lot of fun for everyone and the economic impact was welcome. We produced this film because we were blessed with wide community support.

In addition to our professional crew, we had interns from several colleges who were given the opportunity to have ‘experiential learning’ on set. They now see where they might fit in their future career choices in the filmmaking industry. Look for a screening in early 2020!!
