MHMatters spoke by phone with San Joaquin County Registrar of Voters, Olivia Hale, earlier today, regarding reports of at least one ballot showing the wrong LUSD School Board District candidates for a particular District.
On Wednesday, a local Mountain House resident posted on social media an image showing District 2 candidates on the ballot they received from the Registrar’s office when, in fact, this voter lives in Cordes Village, within District 1.
“Crisis averted,” was her message. Ms. Hale said her office just became aware of the problem last evening, and they have already taken the necessary steps to rectify the situation.
They were quickly able to identify that the issue "came down to only affecting a total of 24 voters in just 9 homes," all on one street in Cordes Village, she stated. She explained that the street in question did not get put into the districting system properly back in 2022. With this being the first election, November 5, 2024, featuring the new LUSD district area voting for Board of Trustees by specified representative areas, they unfortunately didn’t catch it initially.
Her staff have verified this as being the extent of the problem, and are already sending the correct ballot “style” today.
There were just two ballots that were actually submitted that will need to be redone. The rest have yet to complete and submit their ballots. Those voters are being asked to use the updated ballot style that’s being mailed out today.
She said there were also four other voters from the area who did receive the right ballot “style” but, for the sake of transparency and thoroughness, those four are being asked to redo theirs, as well.
Ms. Hale extended her apologies for the mistake, but added that voters, and candidates, can rest assured the Registrar’s office staff took immediate action, and have rectified the issue.
So, this only affected a small number of voters. And, it’s being corrected in plenty of time before election day.
“We are taking this very seriously,” she added. “Our office is committed to getting it right, and will always take whatever measures are necessary to remain transparent in that process, even when we make a mistake.”
This is the first election featuring the new LUSD By-District voting as implemented earlier this year by the school district. There are five Trustee positions on the school board. Three of those five seats are up for election for this term: Districts 1, 2 and 3, as shown on the attached map. Districts 4 and 5 will be up for election in November 2026.
