BAKER’S DOZEN | At Colgate University, the time passes quickly from Thanksgiving to Christmas. Classes pause for a week as students run home for Thanksgiving dinner, only to start again for the most busy and intense weeks of the year leading up to finals. However, while the stress of final papers and exams never quite leaves until they’re handed in, students still find ways to come together and celebrate the holiday season.

Colgate and the village of Hamilton work hard to facilitate community events that are full of joy and fun, and students never fail to appreciate the opportunities to find cheer in an otherwise stressful time. Students also work to carve out time to spend with friends, making the most of the snowy season.

NEWS | Littoral Line Studio, an artisanal shop in Hamilton, N.Y., opened its doors Nov. 15 at 18 Broad Street. Owned by jeweler and metalsmith Lisa Maffiore, the store is dedicated to showcasing handcrafted goods from local and regional artists.

“The main theme of the shop is that any product in here has left the hands of an artisan or an artist,” Maffiore said. “In a society of mass-produced [goods], I’d like to be able to be a place where small business artists and artisans can have their work for sale and make excellent gifts for people.”

COMMENTARY | Every November, like clockwork, it begins: the jingles infiltrate our airwaves, Santa sits for photos at the mall, and our neighbors hoist inflatable snowmen onto their lawns — all while the autumn leaves are still falling. It’s as if Thanksgiving, the noble holiday of gratitude and gravy, gets shoved into the shadows of a Christmas tree looming prematurely on the horizon.

Let’s be clear: this isn’t a war on Christmas. I adore the festive spirit as much as anyone, and if asked, Christmas is most definitely my favorite holiday. I’ll belt Justin Bieber’s “Mistletoe” without shame — in December.

NEWS | Colgate University has started to regulate traffic on Academic Drive behind Lathrop Hall and Lawrence Hall beginning the week of Nov. 11. Now, a Campus Safety officer is stationed between the two buildings to direct traffic and regulate vehicle flow at the popular student drop-off and pick-up location commonly referred to as “the gap.”

The adjustment was announced via email Nov. 11 to the Colgate community by Associate Vice President for Emergency Management, Campus Safety and Environmental Health and Safety Joseph Hernon. Hernon stated the updated traffic measures on Academic Drive were meant to protect students and staff. He further explained to the Maroon-News why Campus Safety had positioned an officer behind two of the busiest academic buildings on Colgate’s campus.

SPORTS | The Colgate University’s men and women’s swimming and diving teams are midway through another exciting season. The women’s swimming and diving teams started their seasons strong with an undefeated streak, winning their first four meets including against Lafayette College and Le Moyne College. In their most recent meets, women’s swimming and diving lost 201 to 98 against Loyola University Maryland and 185 to 114 to Lehigh University, both on Nov. 2, and went 115 to Marist College’s 180 on Nov. 9.

The men’s team, which consists of only a swimming side, took third of four teams in their first two meets before besting Le Moyne 193-104 on Oct. 25. In the most recent meets, Colgate lost 161 to 133 against Lafayette, 47 to Loyola’s 237, 64 to Lehigh’s 212 and 98 to 158 at Marist. Despite the losses, men’s swimming captain and senior Morgan Cecil focused on the strengths of his team against Lafayette.

ARTS & FEATURES | On the night of Halloween, the town of Hamilton, N.Y., was transformed into a festive scene of seasonal cheer, complete with spooky-themed decor outside each storefront and smiling kids running around, eager to score some candy. The nostalgic ambience exactly captured the feeling of a small-town Halloween, and walking through the streets, it was impossible not to be filled with the spirit of the holiday.

Halloween in Hamilton officially kicked off at 3:30 p.m. at the Hamilton Public Library, which was open to children of all ages for an hour of Halloween-themed crafts and a spooky story time. Later in the evening, the Hamilton Theater invited families to a free 5:30 p.m. showing of “Coraline,” sponsored by the Colgate Bookstore and completely open to the public.

NEWS | Donovan’s Pub, commonly referred to as “Donnie’s,” will now be open until 2 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. The kitchen will also operate until 30-60 minutes prior to closure. These scheduling changes, made based on feedback from a student survey, is part of a larger effort by the school to increase the number of late-night options available to students.

Dean of Students Dorsey Spencer Jr. wrote in a Sept. 26 email to students that Fridays@Donnie’s — a weekly event featuring dancing, food, drinks and a student DJ from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m. — would become a permanent fixture in the ’Gate After Dark calendar. ’Gate After Dark, which launched last year, partnered with Donnie’s in hopes of it being a venue where the campus community could come together and unwind.

NEWS | This year marks a century since the groundbreaking of Colgate University’s Huntington Gymnasium in 1924. The new facility replaced the old gymnasium, which was struggling to accommodate the rapidly growing student population of approximately 600 men.

With goals of reaching an enrollment of 1,100 men by 1928, Huntington quickly became a central hub for athletic life at Colgate. The state-of-the-art space met the needs of the University’s increasingly dynamic student body and athletic programs.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR| Dear Colgate Community,
It, unfortunately, feels easy to begin this letter with examples of anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric, both in our Colgate University community and nationwide. I could easily list both personal experiences and the experiences of my LGBTQ+ friends or peers who have been forced to contend with these homophobic incidents. As I have been reflecting on this fact the past few months, I have wondered why it feels as though this sentiment has become so prevalent as of late. Is it the looming shadow of election season? The influence of national politics? Social media perpetuating hateful ideologies? What is causing this homophobia?

In mid-October, for one reason or another, the Coming Out Door in the O’Connor Campus Center (Coop) was damaged, a hole broken through it. These questions, which had been on the back-burner of my mind for so long, suddenly sprung back to life at full force. My rationalization of these questions had worn off, and now I was forced to confront the emotions intertwined with them — fear, pain and hurt, to name a few. These are the emotions that propelled me to write this letter. I wanted to share these feelings with the Colgate community and, in doing so, shed light on the ways in which our behavior and thinking as a community must change.

NEWS | The Center for Women’s Studies, Shaw Wellness Institute and Haven collaborated to organize a diverse itinerary of events in support of Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM). Haven Ambassadors launched the month’s programming with a kick-off tabling session Oct. 1 at the O’Connor Campus Center (Coop).

Sophomore and Haven Ambassador Jay Adolphe explained the goal of these events.

“Not only do ambassadors wish to honor survivors during Domestic Violence Awareness Month, but we also want to spread awareness on [domestic violence] and reduce any stigma around campus about survivors coming to Haven for help,” Adolphe said.

SPORTS | Hockey season is back in Hamilton, N.Y., and Colgate University women’s hockey has already begun their long journey ahead. After securing four consecutive ECAC Championships, Colgate has proven itself as a dominant force in women’s hockey. The Raiders concluded the 2023-2024 season with an impressive 32-7-1 record, which included a Frozen Four appearance following a 3-1 victory over local rival Cornell University in the first round, before ultimately falling to 2023 NCAA ChampionsUniversity of Wisconsin.

However, despite the high expectations, the team faces new challenges after major changes on the ice. With the departure of five key players and their Head Coach Greg Fargo to the PWHL, the Raiders have significant gaps to fill. Colgate alumnae Danielle Serdachny, Allyson Simpson, Sydney Bard, Dara Greig and Kayle Osborne, all played crucial roles in Colgate’s four ECAC titles. They brought a wealth of experience both at Colgate and internationally that will be missed so early on in the season.

NEWS | The Hamilton Chamber of Commerce hosted its first annual Lebanon Street Pie Walk and Fall Fair on Saturday, Oct. 5 from 3 to 6 p.m. to feature the village’s businesses and celebrate the season. With help from Hamilton’s police department, public works, fire department and village government, the Chamber of Commerce closed a portion of Lebanon St. off from traffic for the duration of the pedestrian-only event.

The Fall Fair featured festive games, like SWANK by Design’s pumpkin bowling, street-wide hopscotch, candy corn relays, Good Nature Brewing’s mummy wrap and an apple bucket challenge, where winners could win fall-themed prizes and coupons from the participating businesses. Other local businesses hosted promotional pop-ups, including a massage table from Chikako’s Massage Studio, free flowers from Eagle River Realty and a sundae station by Maxwell’s Chocolates and Ice Cream.

ARTS & FEATURES | Every college student needs a quick, easy recipe they can make with minimal ingredients, dishes and expenses. And what’s more college friendly than pasta? It’s as easy as boiling some water, making some sauce and throwing it all in a pot. In less than 20 minutes, you have the perfect comforting meal. As we get into the fall season, pasta is perfect for those cold, windy fall days when you just want to cozy up in bed and do nothing. If you’re feeling a little bit extra or want to host some friends, I included a simple appetizer that will surely impress any guest.

If you have ever been to Bar Pitti in New York City, you know that they make the most amazing dish called Rigatoni Pitti, tossed with a creamy tomato sauce base, fresh peas and savory sausage. While the official recipe is a secret, that doesn’t mean we can’t recreate it with this rendition.

NEWS | The local chapter of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) held a solidarity rally at the O’Connor Campus Center (Coop) on Wednesday, Sept. 18. Members of SEIU Local 200United — who work at Colgate University libraries, facilities, mail services and information technology — explained to students and passersby the facts of their struggle amid ongoing contract negotiations with the University.

The union chapter, based in Syracuse, N.Y., has been continuously negotiating with the University for a new contract since May 2024. Doug McClure, SEIU Local 200United union representative and sergeant at arms, explained that their primary objective was to obtain a wage increase.

COMMENTARY | Interpersonal conflict can be taxing. Whether it be a petty feud between friends or a volatile conclusion to a romance, it is a stern blow to the psyche whenever such conflict arises and especially when it reaches its peak. Often surprising, though, is the difficult yet paramount task of pursuing forgiveness once the conflict has ended. Perhaps even more taxing than engaging in conflict is our ability to accept it once we have endured it. This article will detail my personal experience with forgiveness and the possible consequences of deceiving oneself into a state of total complacency and ignorance about the results of conflicts.

While it may be exhausting, it is within human nature to retaliate to pain. In Michael E. McCullough and Charlotte vanOyen Witvliet’s article titled “The Psychology of Forgiveness,” it is observedthat humans have “a proclivity to reciprocate negative interpersonal behavior with more negative behavior” when a transgression occurs. We are inclined to avoid or damage our transgressors, and forgiveness certainly seems like a less dazzling approach to confronting pain. However, social theorists have been depicting forgiveness as one of humanity’s core emotional functions since the early 2000’s and some list it as among the 15 most “basic” desires. Why is it, then, that we are so hesitant to forgive?

NEWS | Colgate University’s history department hosted Professor Andy Horowitz, an associate professor of history at the University of Connecticut, Connecticut State Historian and author of the acclaimed book “Katrina: A History, 1915-2015,” on Wednesday, Sept. 18. His work examines the roots of Hurricane Katrina’s devastation in New Orleans, La. and focuses on how disasters are not just sudden, isolated events but are deeply tied to race, class and state policy. Horowitz’s lecture urged listeners to rethink how they understand disasters like Katrina.

“Disasters are not unpredictable attacks or acts of God that arrive without precedent,” Horowitz said. “Their causes and consequences reach across much longer periods of time and space than we commonly imagined.”
