NEWS | This year marks a century since the groundbreaking of Colgate University’s Huntington Gymnasium in 1924. The new facility replaced the old gymnasium, which was struggling to accommodate the rapidly growing student population of approximately 600 men.

With goals of reaching an enrollment of 1,100 men by 1928, Huntington quickly became a central hub for athletic life at Colgate. The state-of-the-art space met the needs of the University’s increasingly dynamic student body and athletic programs.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR| Dear Colgate Community,
It, unfortunately, feels easy to begin this letter with examples of anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric, both in our Colgate University community and nationwide. I could easily list both personal experiences and the experiences of my LGBTQ+ friends or peers who have been forced to contend with these homophobic incidents. As I have been reflecting on this fact the past few months, I have wondered why it feels as though this sentiment has become so prevalent as of late. Is it the looming shadow of election season? The influence of national politics? Social media perpetuating hateful ideologies? What is causing this homophobia?

In mid-October, for one reason or another, the Coming Out Door in the O’Connor Campus Center (Coop) was damaged, a hole broken through it. These questions, which had been on the back-burner of my mind for so long, suddenly sprung back to life at full force. My rationalization of these questions had worn off, and now I was forced to confront the emotions intertwined with them — fear, pain and hurt, to name a few. These are the emotions that propelled me to write this letter. I wanted to share these feelings with the Colgate community and, in doing so, shed light on the ways in which our behavior and thinking as a community must change.

NEWS | The Center for Women’s Studies, Shaw Wellness Institute and Haven collaborated to organize a diverse itinerary of events in support of Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM). Haven Ambassadors launched the month’s programming with a kick-off tabling session Oct. 1 at the O’Connor Campus Center (Coop).

Sophomore and Haven Ambassador Jay Adolphe explained the goal of these events.

“Not only do ambassadors wish to honor survivors during Domestic Violence Awareness Month, but we also want to spread awareness on [domestic violence] and reduce any stigma around campus about survivors coming to Haven for help,” Adolphe said.

SPORTS | Hockey season is back in Hamilton, N.Y., and Colgate University women’s hockey has already begun their long journey ahead. After securing four consecutive ECAC Championships, Colgate has proven itself as a dominant force in women’s hockey. The Raiders concluded the 2023-2024 season with an impressive 32-7-1 record, which included a Frozen Four appearance following a 3-1 victory over local rival Cornell University in the first round, before ultimately falling to 2023 NCAA ChampionsUniversity of Wisconsin.

However, despite the high expectations, the team faces new challenges after major changes on the ice. With the departure of five key players and their Head Coach Greg Fargo to the PWHL, the Raiders have significant gaps to fill. Colgate alumnae Danielle Serdachny, Allyson Simpson, Sydney Bard, Dara Greig and Kayle Osborne, all played crucial roles in Colgate’s four ECAC titles. They brought a wealth of experience both at Colgate and internationally that will be missed so early on in the season.

NEWS | The Hamilton Chamber of Commerce hosted its first annual Lebanon Street Pie Walk and Fall Fair on Saturday, Oct. 5 from 3 to 6 p.m. to feature the village’s businesses and celebrate the season. With help from Hamilton’s police department, public works, fire department and village government, the Chamber of Commerce closed a portion of Lebanon St. off from traffic for the duration of the pedestrian-only event.

The Fall Fair featured festive games, like SWANK by Design’s pumpkin bowling, street-wide hopscotch, candy corn relays, Good Nature Brewing’s mummy wrap and an apple bucket challenge, where winners could win fall-themed prizes and coupons from the participating businesses. Other local businesses hosted promotional pop-ups, including a massage table from Chikako’s Massage Studio, free flowers from Eagle River Realty and a sundae station by Maxwell’s Chocolates and Ice Cream.

ARTS & FEATURES | Every college student needs a quick, easy recipe they can make with minimal ingredients, dishes and expenses. And what’s more college friendly than pasta? It’s as easy as boiling some water, making some sauce and throwing it all in a pot. In less than 20 minutes, you have the perfect comforting meal. As we get into the fall season, pasta is perfect for those cold, windy fall days when you just want to cozy up in bed and do nothing. If you’re feeling a little bit extra or want to host some friends, I included a simple appetizer that will surely impress any guest.

If you have ever been to Bar Pitti in New York City, you know that they make the most amazing dish called Rigatoni Pitti, tossed with a creamy tomato sauce base, fresh peas and savory sausage. While the official recipe is a secret, that doesn’t mean we can’t recreate it with this rendition.

COMMENTARY | Interpersonal conflict can be taxing. Whether it be a petty feud between friends or a volatile conclusion to a romance, it is a stern blow to the psyche whenever such conflict arises and especially when it reaches its peak. Often surprising, though, is the difficult yet paramount task of pursuing forgiveness once the conflict has ended. Perhaps even more taxing than engaging in conflict is our ability to accept it once we have endured it. This article will detail my personal experience with forgiveness and the possible consequences of deceiving oneself into a state of total complacency and ignorance about the results of conflicts.

While it may be exhausting, it is within human nature to retaliate to pain. In Michael E. McCullough and Charlotte vanOyen Witvliet’s article titled “The Psychology of Forgiveness,” it is observedthat humans have “a proclivity to reciprocate negative interpersonal behavior with more negative behavior” when a transgression occurs. We are inclined to avoid or damage our transgressors, and forgiveness certainly seems like a less dazzling approach to confronting pain. However, social theorists have been depicting forgiveness as one of humanity’s core emotional functions since the early 2000’s and some list it as among the 15 most “basic” desires. Why is it, then, that we are so hesitant to forgive?

NEWS | Colgate University’s history department hosted Professor Andy Horowitz, an associate professor of history at the University of Connecticut, Connecticut State Historian and author of the acclaimed book “Katrina: A History, 1915-2015,” on Wednesday, Sept. 18. His work examines the roots of Hurricane Katrina’s devastation in New Orleans, La. and focuses on how disasters are not just sudden, isolated events but are deeply tied to race, class and state policy. Horowitz’s lecture urged listeners to rethink how they understand disasters like Katrina.

“Disasters are not unpredictable attacks or acts of God that arrive without precedent,” Horowitz said. “Their causes and consequences reach across much longer periods of time and space than we commonly imagined.”

NEWS | The storage barn of hay-producer NY Hay Sales in Earlville, N.Y., burned down in a fire on Wednesday, Sept. 11. While no injuries were reported, 90% of the hay manufacturer’s second cutting hay was destroyed. Fumes from the burning cutting hay wafted over into Hamilton from Earlville, filling the air on Colgate’s campus with a smell that many students attributed to the fire and lingered for several days.

NY Hay Sales owner Ed Potrzeba Jr. spoke about his reaction to the fire.

“Everything that you work for all year is just going up in flames,” Potrzeba said.

SPORTS | The Colgate University men’s soccer team beat the University of Virginia Cavaliers 1-0 on Aug. 25, a major upset against a rival that had multiple “heavy advantage[s]” and out-shot the Raiders almost ten-to-one. The game was marked by excellent moments from multiple members: Sophomore Jack Beerling scored the game-winning goal in the first-half, and Senior goalie Oliver Townsend saved eight shots , an impressive career high.

Although the Raiders were facing a well-appointed opponent, they walked onto the field assured of their own capability and talent.

NEWS | The Hub — a coworking space and incubator located in downtown Hamilton — now also offers a pop-up retail storefront that features local and student-run businesses. Located at 20 Utica St., the Hub is a partnership between Hamilton’s active economic development agency called the Partnership for Community Development and Colgate’s Office of Entrepreneurship and Innovation.

Director of the Hub Melissa Davis is a certified business advisor. She commented on the goals of the space.

“The point [of the Hub] is to create an incubator space for small businesses to have a place to come and work on their start-up businesses, or for existing businesses to take the next steps of growth,” Davis said. “There is a lot of mentorship and advising that takes place to get businesses to the next level.”

02/24/2023

NEWS | Theta Chi Fraternity’s chapter house, located at 52 Broad St., has been closed as experts attempt to remediate an extensive rodent infestation, causing residents to be relocated since the beginning of the spring 2023 semester. While the Office of Residential Life was able to find other locations on campus for the students to move, it remains unclear when residents will be able to return as extermination efforts continue.

Stacey Millard, former interim director of residential life who continues to manage the situation, said University staff discovered the infestation over winter break.

“After the University residences closed in December, facilities staff observed rodent activity in the kitchen and food storage areas,” Millard said. “They immediately engaged our pest control contractor to begin remediation and to conduct a more thorough inspection. The pest control contractor was on-site regularly between semesters treating the issue with typical extermination protocols.”

While contractors attempted to resolve the issue when the house was vacant over break, the infestation grew. It became apparent, according to Millard, that the Broad Street residence would not be ready to house students again by the date of residents’ return in late January.
